🎗️October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Early detection saves lives, yet too many women in Southwest Florida delay care because of access or affordability.

📊 Did you know?
‼️ Only 52.8% of female Medicare enrollees ages 65 - 74 received an annual mammography screening in Southwest Florida
‼️ Screening rates are even lower in some counties: 36% in Hendry, 41% in Glades, and 44% statewide
‼️ The national target is 80.3% (Healthy People 2030), which shows how much further we have to go

The Health & Wellness Coalition is working with partners to close these gaps and ensure access to lifesaving screenings.

🌍 October 10 is World Mental Health Day.

In Southwest Florida, we have an urgent need for mental and behavioral health support. According to our 2023 baseline data, the region has just 88.3 behavioral health professionals per 100,000 residents — less than half of our target of 188.5.

The gap is more pronounced in some counties: Hendry only has 33.8 providers per 100,000 residents, while Glades trails even further.

💪 Together, partners are working to close these gaps by reducing barriers to licensure, supporting pathways for mental health professionals, and helping employers build capacity to mentor and retain interns.

👟 October 8 is National Walk & Roll to School Day!

Active living starts early, and safe routes to school make it possible for kids to build healthy habits. The benefits of daily activity extend beyond physical health to improve focus and emotional well-being.

🤔 What can we do together to encourage more physical activity in everyday life in SWFL?

Access to timely mental health services can be a challenge in Southwest Florida. For many, provider shortages mean long waits or no care — leading to poorer outcomes.

The Health & Wellness Coalition is committed to addressing the challenge by bringing partners together and testing pilot projects that expand access and support for our most vulnerable community members.

Su***des in Lee County have been increasing, especially for men ages 65 and older. To help bring awareness to this issue, the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) committee has rolled out a Su***de Awareness Campaign.

Each September, NAMI recognizes Su***de Prevention Month. Acknowledging this, the Health and Wellness Coalition is asking for your support by amplifying their campaign. By resharing this post, you’ll help ensure that more people are connected to resources they desperately need.

📣Back to School Project Updates from Lee County School District Gardens Project:

Over the summer, partners and volunteers came together to prepare for a strong start to the school year — installing irrigation systems, refreshing aquaponic tanks, and expanding access to garden-based learning across campuses.

As students return, these efforts are laying the groundwork for hands-on learning opportunities, which improve mental well-being, support Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathways, and bring fresh, nutritious foods into school cafeterias. 🍅💡🍽️

This year brings new energy and continued collaboration, proving that when educators, community partners, and students work together, the impact extends far beyond the garden bed.

👋 The Health and Wellness Coalition welcomes back all students across the region for a great year filled with growth, connection, and opportunity.

August is National Wellness Month: a powerful reminder that wellness isn't just an individual goal; it's a collective responsibility.

True wellness starts with systems that support people, not just when they’re sick, but before they need care at all.

💡 So we’re asking: What would it take for us to move from treating illness to building wellness — together?

Whether it’s increasing food access, supporting mental health, building walkable communities, or improving healthcare systems, we know we go further when we act together.

New to the Health and Wellness Coalition? Join us at one of our upcoming quarterly Regional Action Team meetings this August to get involved and help shape a healthier future for our region.

👉 View upcoming events www.healthandwellnesscoalition.com/events/ to RSVP.

This month, let’s reflect, connect, and collaborate on solutions that make wellness the default, not the exception.

🎥 Meet one of our partners: Cielo Schnider!

“Through strong partnerships and holding each other accountable, we can do anything,” shared Cielo.

Cielo shared how the collaboration with the Health & Wellness Coalition significantly expedited the implementation of the UF/IFAS Soccer for Success pilot project at Veterans Park Academy. This collective effort brought the program to students faster than ever before, promoting physical activity, nutrition education, and mentorship.

The Health & Wellness Coalition aims to transform Southwest Florida into one of the healthiest communities in the nation by 2040. By uniting organizations across sectors, the coalition focuses on active living, behavioral health, food access, and health systems to improve quality of life.

UF/IFAS's Soccer for Success program uses soccer to engage youth in underserved communities, teaching them healthy habits and life skills.
