Would You Eat Something Called “Egg Fruit?”
It doesn’t sound appetizing to me, but evidently it is delicious, and this exotic tropical fruit is becoming a favorite at our Agricultural Training Center (ATC) for its sweet flavor and unique characteristics.
About 12 years ago, a wonderful agricultural missionary, Cory Thede, helped us get our ATC going with some great donations of a variety of interesting plants. He gave us a little seedling of “egg fruit,” or Canistel, or by its scientific name, Pouteria campechiana. The “egg fruit” seedling is now mature and is reliably bearing fruit. Everyone loves it and is interested in propagating more of it. Wilner and the ATC staff will use the seeds from the best fruit this year to expand its place in our “Edible Tree Nursery.” Canistel, or “egg fruit,” is a tropical fruit tree that produces sweet and creamy, custard-like fruit with a texture like a hard-boiled egg yolk. The fruit has twice the calories of a mango and is rich in vitamins. It can even be cooked like pumpkin for pies. No wonder everyone loves it so much.
Thank you to Cory, who’s now serving the Lord in Zambia, for all your great donations that helped us start our amazing Agricultural Training Center years ago, and thank you to all of you who help us grow and maintain our Development for Sustainability projects that give new hope to so many.
God bless you,
Rad Hazelip, Assistant Executive Director
