Global Surgical Volunteers is beyond proud to celebrate our own board member, Dr. Eeka Marshall , on being named 2025 Person of the Year – “Keeping Our Women Healthy”! 🏆

Dr. Marshall’s dedication to healing doesn’t stop at her own community — every year, she volunteers her time and skill with GSV and other organizations, traveling internationally to bring hope and life-changing surgical care to people who need it most. Her compassion truly knows no borders.

Global Surgical Volunteers is officially opening applications for our November 2026 Surgical Mission Trip:

📅 November 7–14, 2026
📍 Dominican Republic

We are actively looking for:
🩺 OR Nurses (preferred)
🩺 Surgical Technologists
🩺 Anesthesia Providers (CRNA / Anesthesiologist)
🩺 RNs of all specialties

For one week, you’ll be part of a team performing life-changing surgeries in communities where access to surgical care is difficult and in some cases none existent. You’ll come home changed too — we promise.

Please welcome our new member to the board of directors and Teams Coordinator, Anthony J. Silva, MSN, RN, CNOR-ORTHO, AMB-BC, ROT.

Anthony is a nurse leader, perioperative specialist, and educator whose healthcare journey began in Boston, Massachusetts, where he built his foundation within renowned academic medical systems including Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). His background in orthopaedic surgery, perioperative nursing, and leadership has shaped his belief that safe, compassionate surgery begins with teamwork, preparation, and human connection.

Anthony currently serves with Global Surgical Volunteers Inc as director and team coordinator., Anthony has not only been inspired by the impact of surgical outreach but has also developed a deep appreciation and love for the people, culture, and communities of the Dominican Republic. He is honored to join the GSV Board of Directors and help carry forward its mission of expanding access to safe surgical care through service, education, and sustainable partnerships.

Estamos de vuelta en suelo estadounidense, pero un pedazo de nuestro corazón se queda en El Seibo. 🇩🇴✈️🇺🇸

Cuando nos embarcamos en este viaje con Global Surgical Volunteers, sabíamos que habría desafíos. Pero de lo que no nos dimos cuenta plenamente era de que estábamos haciendo historia.
Por primera vez en la historia de El Seibo —una de las ciudades más antiguas y emblemáticas de la República Dominicana— se completó un proyecto de voluntariado de esta magnitud.

La historia no solo la escriben los cirujanos; la escribe la gente. Nuestra semana estuvo marcada por la generosidad de los guardias, la diligencia del personal de limpieza, la brillantez de las enfermeras y la amabilidad de los conductores y cocineros que impulsaron nuestra misión. Cada uno de ustedes tocó nuestras vidas.

Un profundo agradecimiento al Senador Santiago Zorrilla y a Doña Clara. Su equipo no solo nos recibió; se convirtieron en nuestra familia. Nos demostraron lo que un verdadero esfuerzo en equipo puede lograr cuando está impulsado por el amor.

Regresamos a casa con el corazón lleno y una visión clara. Esto no fue solo un viaje; fue el inicio de una alianza de por vida. El Seibo, ya estamos planeando nuestro regreso.

They say two heads are better than one, but today we learned that two hearts are even more powerful. ❤️🩺
Day 4 was a marathon of high-complexity surgeries here in El Seibo. But the highlight wasn’t just the successful procedures—it was the experience of working side-by-side with the local surgeons. 🇩🇴
In the operating room, borders disappeared. We weren’t “visitors” and “locals”; we were one team, minds and hearts united for a single purpose: the well-being of the people. Seeing our surgical techniques blend with their local expertise was a beautiful reminder that compassion has a universal language.
As we head into our final full surgical day tomorrow, our excitement is at an all-time high! We are tired, but we are inspired.
Please keep praying, keep thinking of us, and keep following this journey. We are building more than just a medical mission—we are building lasting partnerships.

The prep work is done—the surgeries have begun! 🏥✨

Day 3 in El Seibo finds us right where we love to be: in the heart of the clinic. The schedule is packed, the hallways are buzzing, and the energy is high.
We have a busy road ahead of us with many patients to serve, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

One of the most rewarding parts of today has been integrating with the local hospital personnel. These men and women are the backbone of healthcare in El Seibo, and getting to know them as we prep the ORs has been a privilege.
We are two teams becoming one, fueled by a shared mission to change lives. We can’t wait to see the impact we’ll make together by the end of this week!

We officially set up our clinic and began evaluating patients for the upcoming surgery week. But it’s about so much more than medical charts. It’s about the new friends we’ve made and the deep partnership we’re building with the people of El Seibo. 🇩🇴
Looking into the eyes of our patients today, one word stands out: HOPE. There is a palpable sense of happiness in the air as we align our goals with our local partners. We aren’t just here for a week; we are working together toward a brighter future for this community and beyond.
Our hearts are full, our team is ready, and the mission is in motion.

Touchdown in El Seibo! 📍🇩🇴
The first day of our mission with Global Surgical Volunteers has been nothing short of magical. Between touring the stunning sites of the East and deep-diving into local traditions, our hearts (and stomachs!) are full.
A massive thank you to Senator Santiago Zorrilla for the incredible welcome and for sharing his passion for this community with us. Over dinner, we aligned our goals and prepared for a week of life-changing work alongside an amazing local team.
The excitement is electric. The mission is clear.
