Kiwanis Club of Fort Myers Beach "Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time..."

The first clubs were organized to promote the exchange of business among the members. However, the members were distributing Christmas baskets to the poor. A lively debate ensued between those who supported community service as the Kiwanis mission and those who supported the exchange of business. By 1919, the service advocates won the debate.

•Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, on January

21, 1915.
•In the early years, Kiwanis clubs focused on business networking, but even then, members were serving the needs of the poor.
•By 1919, the organization had changed its focus from business to service.
•Kiwanis became an international organization in 1916 with the organization of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario.
•Kiwanis limited its membership to the United States and Canada until 1962 when worldwide expansion was approved.
•Until 1987, Kiwanis was a male-only organization. But after years of debate and growing support, women’s membership was received overwhelmingly.
•Kiwanis celebrates 100 years in 2015.

On June 1st, at 10AM, we will be receiving a proclamation from the Mayor of FMB recognizing Kiwanis International's 100th anniversary as well as the FMB Kiwanis 47th anniversary of our charter date, May 31st. This will proclaim June 1, 2015 as FMB Kiwanis Day. In celebration of FMB Kiwanis Day, we will be having cake and ice cream at our thrift store from 12-3 and, during those hours, EVERYTHING IN OUR STORE WILL BE 50% OFF!. Come join us in celebrating!! What a wonderful evening. The Kiwanis Club of Fort Myers Beach hosted the dinner for our Florida District Governor, Chuck Gugliuzza and his wife Emilia. They are such dedicated, wonderful people and I had the privilege of sitting with them. They are dedicated in their work with Project Eliminate, a global project in conjunction with UNICEF to eliminate post neonatal tetanus around the world. The Governor and his wife came to our thrift store prior to the dinner and met with one of the officers of our Key Club, Dakota. The American Legion Post 274, where our dinner was held, did a fabulous job with the food and service. Our Lt. Governor, Donna Williamson put together a wonderful program and was an awesome host. We were entertained by the fabulous singing of Jennifer "Goldern Note" Gilmore who did a fantastic rendition of God Bless America. All-in-all, a successful evening.

Annual Kiwanis Florida District convention was held this weekend in Boca Raton. Hundreds of members from all over Florida. New friendships were formed and an abundance of positive energy from a massive group of people who just want to make a difference in the world. Be a part of this high-energy team.
