We still can't believe that over the years we have collected over 1,000 units of blood and that we had the opportunity to debut a blood mobile donated in honor of Wren and all children fighting cancer. 🦄🩸🎗️

The Levine Children's Oncology Department had a need. They asked. And we fulfilled their need same day.

Because of your generous donations, we are able to respond quickly and fulfill their needs IMMEDIATELY.

Most people think that insurance covers everything when you have cancer… and while it covers a lot, there are tons of little random things that it doesn’t cover and that hospitals don’t necessarily have on hand to be able to provide… until now.

Just a few things we’ve been able to help provide:

🎒 appropriate sized backpacks for continuous chemotherapy (so they aren’t confined to a bed or a pole)
🩹 shower shields for external central lines
🚿 shower caddies for parents with kids in the ICU with no access to a private shower
🏋🏻‍♀️ exercise equipment for parents in isolation and needing movement
🧘🏻‍♀️ yoga mats, bands, neck massagers and other comfort items

‼️ Every TWO SECONDS someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries.

When Wren was going through treatment, the first thing they said to us was that Wren needed blood and she needed it NOW. She had a total of 17 life saving unicorn juice (blood) transfusions while she was sick.

There was actual a blood shortage then too, just like there is now. Something you don’t think about, you never know when you might need blood and you always take for granted that it will be there when you need it but… it might not.

The American Red Cross North Carolina is currently urging people to donate blood. Your help is needed right now.

A blood donation takes about an hour from start to finish but the actual donation itself only takes between 8 to 10 minutes. This short commitment can save as many as THREE people with each donation.

SEPTEMBER IS PEDIATRIC CANCER AWARENESS MONTH 🎗️

This month, and every month, as it’s guiding mission, Wren’s Village aims to provide:

WREN’S WALLETS
$250 in gift cards to help with gas, medications, food, some fun, and a lot of hope to ease the unexpected burden that pediatric cancer has on a family, regardless of where they are in their journey.

FUNDING
To support pediatric cancer research. As of 2023, funding for pediatric cancer research totals less than 4% on a national level.

SPARKING AWARENESS TO ACTION
Through outreach, education, & blood drives.

This memory from 8/31/2016 popped up on my phone again yesterday.

I don’t remember this picture or what was going on exactly. I can see the steroids in her cheeks, her paleness and thinner, stringy hair.

I can do the math that she had been diagnosed with leukemia for just about 3.5 weeks, so I know that we were coming up on 28 days … that would be the most telling test we had had to date.

A second bone marrow biopsy would be performed to see if she had responded to the chemo or not.

She was very high risk, we didn’t know if it was in her brain or not or if the tumors had responded and shrunk … at that point, all we knew was that that test would be a big indicator of how this whole thing was going to go.

I can see the exhaustion in my face and devastation in my eyes. I was about 9 weeks pregnant with Stella and it was all so very raw. It feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago … someone else’s life actually.

But, here we are … Wren has officially been cancer-free for 7 years, and officially considered CURED.

Today is the first day of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️

It is so hard to remember when that didn’t mean a thing to me.

But now, it is always just under the surface - often on top if I’m being honest- it is my life’s mission to have no more awareness month because there will be NO MORE CANCER, for anyone, but especially littles like Wren.

More than 43 families a day will hear their kids have cancer … so about 1300 by the end of September.

We are just DAYS away from Pediatric Awareness Month. 🎗️ September, the one month blip squeezed between Back to School & Breast Cancer.

Approximately 43 a children a DAY in this country are diagnosed - that’s about 2 elementary school classrooms. *EVERY DAY*

We like to think it’s rare, but when your child is one of those statistics and an empty chair in a classroom, it isn’t.
