Years ago, in New Jersey, I worked for the RSVP (Retired, Senior Volunteer Program). My job entailed marketing the needs and recruiting volunteers to assist area nonprofits. One day I interviewed a potential volunteer, gathering information on her skills, interests, availability. I suggested that the best "fit" would be the local chapter of The American Cancer Society. With this she "bristled" and emphatically declared, "I CAN'T FIND A CURE FOR CANCER!"

I gently suggested that if she was able to commit just one day a week to this agency, taking on necessary office tasks (answering the phone, greeting visitors, filing, typing forms, collating paperwork, sorting donations, preparing the monthly newsletter), she could provide a staff member with an uninterrupted day to work on an upcoming event, to raise needed research monies, to potentially . . . wait for it . . . find a cure for cancer.

Years later I would remember such interactions that eventually lead to the creation of my tagline -- Don't let your inability to do everything prevent you from doing something.

So purchase that purple bow (Darlene Blount Cave for Cystic Fibrosis research) or make a donation (Bert Harper as a Blood Cancer United visionary). Together, we are making inroads finding cures in memory of our loved ones. Your donation is never too small or too late to show your support and make a difference.

PSA to all caregivers:

Feeling a bit of panic after checking the calendar? Only a few days until this school year ends? Wondering how to make this a meaningful summer break with mentoring opportunities to increase compassion for others? Perhaps these suggestions will present some ideas. Senior citizens are especially grateful when the kids tag along to deliver meals. Preparing food is a great way to have the kids practice reading a recipe, measuring the ingredients, and packaging the finished product. Teens and young adults who are home from college for the summer are great candidates for delivering meals once a week to homebound seniors or helping to unload a food truck at a local food pantry.

Here are some ideas from The Giving Porch:
*prepare frozen meals to lessen the burden of foster and adoptive care parents (Defend the Fatherless)
*purchase an assortment of greeting cards (Dollar Tree) along with a roll of stamps to allow a homebound senior to stay in touch (nursing and assisted living homes, York County Council on Aging)
*volunteer to play Bingo, board games, work on a jigsaw puzzle at an assisted living/nursing home
*sign up to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors (York County Council on Aging)
*recruit your child's summer sports team to collect nonperishables for a food pantry or soup kitchen
*clean out your closets for gently loved shoes, clothing, suitcases, bed linens, towels for the underserved
*offer to mow the yard/walk the dog/shop for groceries/run errands for a family experiencing loss
*read to a visually impaired senior
*tutor a student struggling in school
*wash bed linens and towels for a homeless shelter (Bethel Shelters)
*teach a child to play chess
*become a pen pal to a homebound senior
*prepare and serve dinner at a homeless shelter (Life House Women's Shelter, The Haven, Bethel Shelters)
*help sort and tag donations at a thrift store (Oakland Park Ministries Thrift Store)
*clean out your toys and donate those that are gently loved (thrift stores)
*knit, crochet, or quilt lap robes for homebound seniors
If an idea is worth pursuing, please reach out and we will share the additional contact information for the agency.
