27 years ago today, April 15, 1994, was my first “official” day as a professional Scouter. After several years as a Scouting volunteer, I’d taken a God-led leap of faith, kissing my wife and 3 small children goodbye, climbing into a small Ryder truck and driving 13 hours north to begin my new career. They joined me 3 months later. That first weekend, I spent my 33rd birthday at a District Camporee in a borrowed tent, almost 900 miles from “home”, surrounded by strangers who would become my Kentucky Scouting family.
A little over 3 years later, God led us back to Georgia, where I served the Northwest Georgia Council for almost 20 years, raising my family and being close enough to take care of my extended family. 4 ½ years ago, God tapped us on the shoulder again and led us 11 hours away from our kids and grandkids to serve the Mason-Dixon Council as your Scout Executive, beginning on December 1, 2016.
The past 4+ years as your Scout Executive has been the pinnacle of my professional Scouting career and, even though the last couple of years has been a most challenging time for our MDC Scouting family and the BSA overall, I know now why God sent us here and what he wanted me to do and I've tried to do His work to the best of my ability.
Now, God has tapped us on the shoulder once again. In this crazy real estate market, when we had just decided we were supposed to “hunker down” and continue our work here, he led us to a great house in a great location at an affordable price within an hour of our children and grandchildren, and only a few hours from all our extended family. It is both ironic and fitting that, on the 27th anniversary of the first day of this journey, I’m announcing that I will retire from professional Scouting effective June 1, 2021. My last “official” day of employment as Scout Executive/CEO of the Mason-Dixon Council will be May 31. After that, I’m being promoted back to the volunteer Scouter ranks from whence I came. As I’ve shared with many of you, God led us here and now he’s leading us “home”.
It has been the greatest honor and privilege of my professional Scouting career to serve the Mason-Dixon Council as your Scout Executive. We have so many new lifelong friends and memories from our time here, and I look forward to continuing those relationships down the Scouting trail. Layne and I thank you from the bottom of our heart for this opportunity and I know the future will be bright for MDC because of all of you! Keep working hard to deliver the promise of Scouting to our families and, as always, “Scout On!”.
