Why does humanism in healthcare matter? What questions from clinicians help create a humanistic appointment for patients?

Hear Gold Foundation President and CEO Dr. Kathleen Reeves discuss the great impact of humanism in healthcare with host Brian Southwell on The Measure of Everyday Life - WNCU:

Our healthcare system comprises people -- including patients who need help and healthcare professionals who help them -- and yet our discussions about healthcare in the U.S. often focus on abstract concepts such as financial cost or new technologies. On this episode, we talk with the leader of....

We at the Gold Foundation were saddened to hear about recent passing of Leonard Tow, philanthropist, great champion of humanism in healthcare, and beloved friend of our co-founders, Drs. Arnold and Sandra Gold. Dr. Tow died Sunday at age 97.

Dr. Tow believed deeply in the power of medicine and science, as well as education and the arts. Thanks to his vision and generosity through The Tow Foundation, hundreds of humanistic physicians have been recognized with the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. More than a hundred medical schools bestow this award as their highest recognition of humanism.

Here are a few of the sentiments we heard when we asked honorees what the Tow Award meant to them:

"Receiving the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award was very meaningful. I received it during my first year as a faculty member. It signaled to me that, despite my imposter syndrome, I was on the right track and connected me to a network of like-minded physicians and physicians in training. I'm so grateful for Dr. Tow's legacy." - Dr. Erin Miller

"One of my proudest moments was to receive the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award at the Medical College of Wisconsin! It was such an honor to be recognized for what I cherish most in patient care. Humans caring for humans. His legacy will surely live on in all our hearts." - Dr. Wendy Peltier

We are grateful to Dr. Tow for his support of humanism in healthcare and the Gold Foundation, and we send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
