How does mortality shape our understanding of life? The poems of Grossberg’s “When We Read a Novel the Dead Would Like” span the trauma of coming out as a gay man at the height of the US AIDS epidemic to the advent of PrEP—a class of HIV-prevention drugs—twenty-five years later. Grossberg wrestles with the growing awareness that, though one bugbear may press less close, death still waits, patient and inevitable. A series of elegies for the poet’s mother, who returns as a wry, irreverent ghost “swirling / ice cubes in a tumbler of vodka,” lies at the heart of this ranging, cinematic collection.

We are looking to read about experiences from writers of all backgrounds. We are particularly interested in receiving more work from q***r, trans, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) voices and are committed to publishing a diverse roster of authors each year.

as we get closer to NYC Pride this weekend, we wanted to share the words of our beloved author Jack Wiler. This poem comes from Wiler’s posthumous collection, attention is paid to the present moment. Wiler examines, with humor, compassion and fearlessness, the pleasures in life—especially the varieties of love—from friendship to sex—and how we are capable of ruining those pleasures for ourselves or for others. Jack helps us understand that life and death are each, in its own way, gifts we must live with relish, abandon and commitment.

CKP publishes work that explores the emotional and psychological landscapes of everyday life. We are looking to read about experiences from writers of all backgrounds.

We are particularly interested in receiving more work from q***r, trans, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) voices and are committed to publishing a diverse roster of authors each year.

With our LaurelBooks: The Literature of Illness and Disability imprint, CavanKerry is also especially engaged with work from people living with physical and/or mental illness and disability.

Our Florenz Eisman Memorial Collection features authors from our home state of New Jersey.
