Our crew was formed just two weeks before the first confirmed case of COVID-19 was reported in New Jersey (right here in Fort Lee, to be exact). As we were ordered to quarantine, we had to put many of our crew’s goals on hold. Despite this, we still try our best to live as sustainably as possible in a time when everything has become even more disposable and harmful for the planet— mass production of single-use plastic gloves, face masks, toxic and harmful disinfectants, and citywide lifts on plastic bag bans across the country.
Even though we may not be able to accomplish some of our goals in person, we recognize that there are so many other ways of making a difference. We can stand in solidarity with our Black and indigenous brothers and sisters who are suffering now more than ever. We can demand that justice be restored to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, who are at risk of losing their reservation land trust. We can join the millions of young activists around the world who are fighting climate change despite the pandemic.
We also recognize that just by quarantining, we are preventing the virus from spreading. If we are preventing the virus from spreading, that means we are saving lives. Take a moment to reflect on that. Just by you staying at home and watching Netflix, you are literally preventing the virus from spreading more and saving countless lives. It is so important to recognize and celebrate these seemingly minuscule wins, especially at a time of great uncertainty and fear. With each small step, we are making a world of a difference.
