🎷 Bringing Jazz Into the Classroom! 🎷

Did you know the Gold Coast Jazz Society's Jazz Education & Outreach Program, JazzSLAM (Jazz Supports Language Arts & Math), brings the power of jazz directly into local schools?

Designed by musician and educator Mari Mennel-Bell, JazzSLAM is a FREE in-school program for 4th and 5th grade students featuring a live, interactive presentation by a professional jazz quartet. More than just a music performance, JazzSLAM connects jazz to Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies, helping students develop critical thinking skills, creativity, self-expression, and strategies that support academic success.

Students discover how musical forms relate to essay writing, how rhythm connects to mathematical concepts, and how the rich cultural history of jazz ties into geography and social studies. The program engages learners through aural, visual, and tactile experiences that make learning both meaningful and memorable.
Thanks to the support of community partners and grant funding, JazzSLAM continues to inspire young minds while preserving America's original art form.

A trip down memory lane…

06/08/2026

Take a trip down memory lane with us!

Frederick G. Ruffner, Jr. had a vision to bring more jazz to the “Gold Coast" area of South Florida. In 1992, Fred and a group of avid jazz buffs made this vision a reality by forming a non-profit organization called the Gold Coast Jazz Society in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Following its formation, the GCJS developed a concert series, which was presented in the main dining room of the historic Riverside Hotel, located on the famous Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. As the concert series continued to grow and expand, a larger venue was required. The concert series was eventually moved to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, located in the Arts & Science District of Fort Lauderdale.

Today, the seven-concert jazz series continues to be presented in the Amaturo Theater each year from November through May. Over the years the Society has grown and expanded to include the presentation of jazz education and community outreach activities, the Jeanette M. Russell Jazz Scholarship Program, and many special events throughout the year.

Our new season is just gearing up...consider a Membership that supports numerous programs in schools and in the musical arts for the next generation of jazz musicians.
A membership also gives you notable discounts on Season Subscriptions and Jazz Trio Subscriptions.
