Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a people who transformed struggle into strength and hope into progress.

As we commemorate June 19, 1865—the day the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom—we honor the generations who fought for justice, equality, and opportunity. We also celebrate the rich cultural contributions, achievements, and stories that continue to shape our communities today.

At Friends of AARLCC, we recognize the importance of preserving history, uplifting voices, and creating spaces where culture, education, and community thrive.

Let us reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and continue building a more equitable future together.

Happy Juneteenth.

🎨 CREATE. REFLECT. CONNECT.

Join us for a free hands-on community art workshop as part of Hued Songs' two-year residency at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center.

📅 Saturday, June 6
⏰ 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
📍 African American Research Library and Cultural Center, Fort Lauderdale

Led by artist Pangea Kali Virga, this interactive workshop invites participants of all ages to contribute to a collaborative mixed-media Freedom Flag inspired by the themes of The Juneteenth Experience.

Through fabric, symbols, colors, and personal expression, attendees will help create a powerful community artwork that honors resilience, memory, joy, and the ongoing pursuit of freedom. Each contribution becomes part of a larger story—one woven together through creativity, reflection, and collective vision.

The completed Freedom Flag will be raised during The Juneteenth Experience performances on June 19 and June 20, carrying the energy and intentions of everyone who helped bring it to life.

This intergenerational workshop is free, participatory, and welcoming to all backgrounds and experience levels. Come create, connect, and experience the spirit of Juneteenth through community and art.

💐 Happy Mother’s Day from Friends of AARLCC 💐

Today, we honor the strength, love, and legacy of every mother and mother figure in our community. Whether by birth, by bond, or by heart—your care, guidance, and sacrifices shape generations and nurture the future.

To the mothers who lead with grace, who pour endlessly into others, and who hold families and communities together—we see you, we celebrate you, and we thank you.

We also hold space for those who are remembering, longing, or navigating this day in their own way. You are seen and honored, too.

May today be filled with appreciation, joy, and the love you so freely give every day. 💛

With love,
Friends of AARLCC
