Nova Southeastern University has named Andres Pinto, D.D.S., D.M.D., M.P.H., M.S.C.E., MBA, as the new dean of the College of Dental Medicine!

Dr. Pinto brings 27 years of experience leading academic and clinical teams, most recently at Case Western Reserve University and the MetroHealth System in Cleveland, where he helped oversee patient care and training for the next generation of dental professionals.

When educators and employers work together, they power the region's economy. That was the message from NSU's Robert P. Smith, Ph.D., interim assistant vice president for research, at the Broward Forward roundtable hosted by the South Florida Business Journal and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance. Smith shared how NSU is preparing graduates for Broward's growing healthcare and ocean science fields.

“You didn’t earn this degree to look impressive on a wall. You earned it to climb. You earned it to help.”

That was the message former NASA astronaut Scott Parazynski left with NSU’s Class of 2026. And it continues to inspire. Dr. Parazynski was joined by his wife, Meenakshi Wadhwa, director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC—San Diego. They toured NSU’s Ocean Campus, diving to see coral nurseries, then learning about the university’s sea turtle conservation efforts at the Marine Environmental Education Center.

Could this be a breakthrough in the fight against melanoma? 🔬

Researchers at NSU have discovered a compound that attacks advanced melanoma in two ways: killing tumor cells directly and helping the immune system detect and fight cancer cells it couldn't see before. Early results show it performs just as well as standard treatments, offering new hope for patients who don't respond to current therapies.

Today is World Pharmacists Day, and this discovery is a great reminder of the impact pharmacy scientists have on the future of medicine, all the way from the lab to the patients they serve.

A new chapter for a familiar NSU leader!

NSU President Emeritus George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., has released Keep Your Aim Above Your Reach: The Practice of Transformational Leadership, a new book drawing on six decades of leadership in higher education, local government and civic service.

Part memoir and part leadership guide, the book shares personal stories and lessons about leading with purpose, integrity, service and community.

And every purchase gives back to NSU. All net proceeds from book sales will benefit student scholarships and research at the university.

Meet Milo, a 26-foot, male whale shark who just set a record no shark has held before.

Researchers fitted Milo with five satellite tags off Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. For nearly a decade, those tags have traced more than 34,000 miles of travel, the longest track ever documented for a shark.

This groundbreaking research was a collaboration among the Guy Harvey Foundation, the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), Mexican conservation organization Ch'ooj Ajauil AC, and the University of Rhode Island and was recently featured in Forbes.

Dr. Mahmood Shivji, director of NSU's Guy Harvey Research Institute, says Milo has shown that whale sharks are capable of enormous, open-ocean migrations while also being just as willing to settle into a small area for months at a time.

With whale sharks listed as an endangered species, these migratory tracks help identify the places that matter most to their survival.
