Kelfer’s work is currently on view at Girls’ Club in Floating, an exhibit that dives into the world of botany and macro photography from an unlikely perspective - underwater.

Kelfer is a fine art photographer whose work explores memory, place and the emotional power of light. Inspired by travel, art history and the natural world, she creates images that invite contemplation and connection. Into the Weeds, a solo exhibition of new work by South Florida-based artist Christina Pettersson features revent works in charcoal, pastel. colored pencil and installation-based mixed medianworks. Through her large-scale drawings, Pettersson guides us through love of nature as a political stand, a survival tool, and asks: How do we become wild again?

Christina Pettersson was born in Stockholm, Sweden and grew up in Miami, Florida. Her large scale drawings, videos, installations and group performances focus on the hidden histories and environment of Florida. Public programming and collaborations are central to her art practice, engaging the audience directly in a deeper understanding of the narratives inhabiting their own backyards. Her artwork reveals an allegiance to the wilderness of a bygone era, the sorcery of the night, and the experience of a world in decline.

Girls’ Club collection artist Aliza Nisenbaum // her work, Silk Scarf, 2025, in the collection and a newly commisioned mural at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago

“The OPC’s library, meanwhile, is the latest addition to the Chicago Public Library system. A characteristically colorful mural by Queens-based painter Aliza Nisenbaum watches over its main reading room. At 70 feet-long, this is Nisenbaum’s largest mural yet. “It’s a very different type of work,” she said on a video call. Her portraits often include elements of social practice in terms of the relationships she builds with sitters. Some figures here hail from that archive, “coming together in an imagined collective,” she said. Others are famous writers. Nisenbaum appears twice.

Details abound, informed by Nisenbaum’s formative years at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and visits to the city’s libraries. The kente textiles of Barack Obama Sr.’s native Kenya appear. So do flowers from Mexico, Nisenbaum’s homeland. Perhaps most interestingly, she has equated the stages of learning with the times of day, progressing from left to right.

“I was thinking of seeds, and how President Obama would talk about dreams,” she said. “Things are planted, then we come together and we discuss ideas, and through a synthesis, we come up with new ideas together, and then we go into our own dreams and our own personal individual space.”

Girls’ Club Collection presents Into the Weeds, a solo exhibition of new work by South Florida-based artist Christina Pettersson. The exhibit brings visitors into a vast garden of flowers, medicinal herbs, and weeds built by charcoal, pastel and colored pencil. Through her large-scale drawings and installations, Pettersson guides us through love of nature as a political stand, a survival tool, and asks: How do we become wild again?

The works detail and study the intricacies of nature’s lost power - the weeds that can heal, the flowers that can interrupt biology, while also showing us the madness of human intervention within the field of industrial agriculture and botany.

Floating, photography series by Janet Kelfer that dives into the world of botany and macro photography from an unlikely perspective - underwater. These submerged worlds of giant petals, stems, leaves and stamen create a theatrical and dramatic stage for contemplating the arrival of South Florida’s wet summer season.
