Support and Awareness for Eating Disorders - SAFE

Support and Awareness for Eating Disorders - SAFE We will be offering support groups for people effected by eating disorders (including family and friends), as well educate health care professionals.

For more than two decades, my life and the lives of my family and close friends have been impacted by my struggles with eating disorders. Since leaving residential treatment many years ago and living in different communities, I have found that there is often a gap in availability of support groups. There are support groups on social media, and through treatment centers. However, finding available

and affordable support groups in the community can be extremely difficult. My family and I have formed this organization to help fill this gap, not just for all of us afflicted with eating disorders, but for our families and closest friends who try to support us in any way possible. Those afflicted with eating disorders live in a world of secrets and loneliness, afraid to share with those around them in fear of judgement or hurting their loved ones. SAFE will provide the space in which these people can openly discuss their feelings. Through education and the sharing of experiences, parents, siblings and friends will better understand their loved ones struggle and how to support them without judgement. The other objective of SAFE is to provide education and awareness for the health care professionals. So often the health care professionals and their staff are completely unaware of how their comments and practice trigger those with eating disorders. They also do not always recognize the early warning signs. SAFE will be working with a group of highly qualified medical, dental, and alternative medicine professionals to create written materials and presentations to improve their knowledge in dealing with this population. Together, with a strong unified front, SAFE hopes that it can help anyone afflicted with eating disorders, their families and friends, as well as work to spread awareness of the early warning signs in hopes that others do not have to suffer in the same way.

New blog post!

Something that I have noticed along my journey to recovery is that the world is full of triggers. For eating disorders, food is everywhere. It is how we spend time with people- we go for brunch or lunch or dinner. It is on our TVs- commercials, cooking shows and eating shows. We also find triggers r...

I've been asked many times "why do you torture yourself?" "Why can't you just eat?" "Why do you have an eating disorder?" I wonder sometimes when I am asked the last question if an alcoholic or a drug addict would be asked the same thing. Eating disorders are a mental health disease, just like addic...

Shadows are everywhere. Everyone and everything has a shadow (unless you're Peter Pan and you lose yours). But, what if there is a different type of shadow following you everywhere you go. A haunting shadow that whispers in the wind and follows you even into the dark. A shadow that lurks and judges....

Come follow my blog! In order to work on bringing SAFE out into the community, we need to show the community that they are not alone!

Recovery isn’t something I dreamt about. Recovery is, honestly, something I didn’t think was possible at one point. ED’s shadow lurked everywhere I went, so seeing the other side of the crossroads was not easy. But, I found my way; blindly following the whisper down a path I hadn’t ventured ...

“In any given moment, we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.”

– Abraham Maslow

I know that over the last few years times have been tough. With COVID we have seen a surge in eating disorder behaviors and even some of those who were in recovery have gone back to what they think is the comfortable, safe environment of the eating disorder. Do not feel bad. Do not put yourself down because you've had a difficult time maybe finding your reason for recovery.

There is always the saying that it does not matter how many times you fall down, but rather how many times you get back up! It is about remembering that YOU are in control, not ED.

Take the option to step forward down the path of recovery. Celebrate the steps you take, even if you feel that they are tiny. Appreciate your body for all that it does FOR you. It is not too late to choose the path of recovery and leave the crossroads. I believe in you, even when you don't believe in yourself.
