We are beyond excited to announce that our very own Peter Berger was named the American Lung Association's 2026 National Volunteer of the Year in the Non-Medical Category!

Peter serves on our South Florida Local Leadership Board and as our Committee Chair for the Fight For Air Climb Miami.

Peter’s impact stands out not only for what he has accomplished but also for how he shows up to serve our mission—consistently, generously, and with a clear sense of purpose. Over the past several years, he has become a trusted leader and advocate, using his personal experiences with lung disease to help strengthen our work across South Florida and beyond.

His leadership has elevated community engagement, inspired fellow volunteers, and expanded awareness around lung health in meaningful and lasting ways. The South Florida Leadership Board is excited to announce our incoming Board Chair, Dr. Mark Block.

For more than two decades, Dr. Block has devoted his career to caring for people with lung disease. As Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Memorial Cancer Institute, Dr. Block treats patients facing lung cancer, advanced lung disease, and complex thoracic conditions. Every day, he sees how deeply lung health affects not only survival but quality of life. His efforts to elevate research and lung health priorities across South Florida, as well as his outstanding contributions to patient care and lung cancer treatment, were recognized with the 2023 LUNG FORCE Distinguished Physician’s Award. He has served on the Local Leadership Board since 2015 and is a member of the Southeast Regional Board.
