🔥 Wildfire Awareness & Sustainable
Living in Edgewood
Here in Edgewood, we’re fortunate to live in a beautiful, lush part of Fort Lauderdale — but with that beauty comes responsibility. The recent wildfires across South Florida have been a powerful reminder that sustainability isn’t just about recycling and conserving water — it’s also about building resilient neighborhoods that can better withstand environmental challenges.
As part of the Edgewood Civic Association community, we have an opportunity to take simple, proactive steps that protect our homes, our neighbors, and our local environment.
🌿 Why Wildfires Are Increasing in South Florida
While wildfires are often associated with western states, Florida is one of the most wildfire-prone states in the country. Extended dry seasons, invasive plant species, and increased development near natural areas all contribute to higher fire risk.
Climate variability and hotter, drier stretches make vegetation more flammable — especially in neighborhoods bordered by wooded areas, canals, or vacant lots.
The good news? Small actions at the neighborhood level can make a big difference.
🏡 Sustainable Steps to Reduce Fire Risk at Home
1️⃣ Create Defensible Space
Maintain a buffer zone around your home:
Trim tree branches away from roofs and power lines
Remove dead plants, leaves, and palm fronds
Keep gutters clear of debris
Store firewood and flammable materials away from structures
A well-maintained yard is not only safer — it’s more sustainable and easier to manage year-round.
2️⃣ Choose Fire-Wise Landscaping
Consider:
Native, low-water plants that retain moisture
Gravel or stone ground cover in strategic areas
Spacing shrubs and trees to reduce fire spread
Florida-friendly landscaping supports local wildlife, reduces irrigation needs, and lowers fire vulnerability.
3️⃣ Reduce Yard Waste Responsibly
Avoid burning yard debris. Instead:
Use city green waste pickup
Compost where possible
Mulch responsibly (avoid thick piles close to structures)
4️⃣ Be Water Smart
During dry periods, mindful irrigation keeps landscapes healthier and less flammable. Water early in the morning and follow local watering guidelines to conserve resources while protecting vegetation.
🤝 Community Sustainability = Community Safety
Sustainability is strongest when we act together. Simple neighborhood efforts can include:
Reporting illegal dumping in vacant lots
Coordinating seasonal yard cleanups
Sharing emergency preparedness information
Supporting local environmental initiatives
When each homeowner maintains their property with care, we strengthen the entire Edgewood community.
🌎 A Resilient Future for Edgewood
Wildfires are a reminder that environmental stewardship and public safety go hand in hand. By embracing sustainable landscaping, responsible waste management, and proactive maintenance, we protect not only our homes — but also the natural beauty that makes Edgewood such a special place to live.
Together, we can create a greener, safer, and more resilient neighborhood.
