Bike Walk FTL

Bike Walk FTL We're an all-volunteer advocacy group working to make Fort Lauderdale a world-class bicycle and pedestrian friendly city. Per year, 122 Floridians die on bikes.

We're looking for your ideas and help to add new bike paths and lanes and to become a place where everyone wants to cycle and walk. Bike FTL is an all-volunteer advocacy group formed in April 2017 to represent bicyclists and pedestrians. Our goal is to help create a city that’s safe for cycling and walking. Right now, Fort Lauderdale is far from it. Florida is the nation’s worst state for walking

and traveling by bike. Year after year, Florida is among the top states in bicycle and pedestrian fatalities. Every year since 2001, Florida has ranked in the top three states for bicycle and pedestrian fatalities. When you factor in population, Florida had more than six deaths per million residents – far more bicycle deaths than any other state. On average in Broward County, there’s a bicycle fatality every other month. According to the city’s statistics, 4 out of 5 people own a bicycle in Fort Lauderdale. That means the vast majority of people are cyclists. Despite the vast number of bicyclists, 60 percent of residents feel like the city’s streets aren’t safe enough for bikes. When the city asked residents in a recent survey what their priorities were, the No. 1 answer was to make the city more bike and pedestrian accessible. That’s ahead of sea level rise, which came in second. Our goal is to work with the city and state to create bike lanes and pedestrian access. Just how we do that is up to you: please post your ideas on our page, attend our rides, and come out for public hearings on bike lanes. Together we can make Fort Lauderdale safe for cyclists and pedestrians.

We saw a small glimpse recently what life with fewer cars would look like when the city temporarily shut down lanes on A1A, Las Olas, and Galt Ocean. Can you imagine a Fort Lauderdale with fewer cars?

Why do American cities waste so much space on cars?

The long-planned Underline broke ground this year and is scheduled to open in June. We're jealous! And also optimistic. Could LauderTrail/Mockingbird Trail become our Underline?

The Underline is a new project that aims to effectively use the area underneath the Metrorail. This will ultimately function as a bike path, living art installation and open space for those looking…

Many in the cycling community are stunned and saddened by a judge's sentence last week against the driver who killed two cyclists last year. Her license will be suspended for six months, and she must attend traffic school.

But the judge had little choice in the case, with Florida laws that simply don't hold drivers accountable for killing cyclists. Right now, state lawmakers are considering House Bill 455 and Senate Bill 308, which would criminalize and give some real penalties for killing and seriously injuring cyclists and pedestrians if a driver commits a moving traffic violation. Please join us in supporting these bills.

Is there more we can do? How else should we react to this sentence?

The driver won’t do any jail time. One family member of a victim said, “It’s like their lives didn’t even matter. There was no justice.”

We’re hopeful this could mean more attention on bike and pedestrian fatalities here in Fort Lauderdale. Last year an astonishing 30 pedestrians and cyclists were killed on our streets.

Democrats & Republicans in United States Congress are considering ideas to make roads safer for walkers and bicycle riders. Proposals include bike lanes and flashing caution lights when people cross the street.

A group bike ride around Brooklyn shows that DOT has its work cut out for it. Here are small fixes that could keep cyclists and pedestrians alive.

We've emailed or met with each of the city commisioners, and unfortunately they won't put off the work to remove the Las Olas bike lanes. Instead, they will be returning a major section of Las Olas into a four-lane highway. This is a situation that led to the deaths of three pedestrians in a two-year period, and we fear it may lead to tragedy again.

Please, if this is an issue you care about, we urge you to write the Commissioners. Their emails are below, and we will paste a letter you're welcome to use in the comments field.

We were disheartened to learn recently that the city plans to rip up the bike lanes on Las Olas and return a main section of the boulevard to a five-lane highway.

Members of the Bike Walk FTL board met with city officials today to request that this issue go before the City Commission for a vote.

Las Olas configured as a five-lane road created a dangerous situation previously, leading to the deaths of three pedestrians. We're hopeful the city will at least allow public input before this begins.

We're working with the city to develop an urban pedestrian and cycling trail called LauderTrail. And how cool if it could include something like this, right?

The second Bicycle Architecture Biennale showcases some of the innovative ways cities are encouraging bike use in urban areas.

As Fort Lauderdale sets out to build the LauderTrail, here's some fine reading material.

As Fort Lauderdale sets out to build the LauderTrail, here's some fine reading material.

The projects featured in the new Bicycle Architecture Biennale–from bike lanes through a pond to soaring bike bridges–highlight just how beautiful and transformative bike infrastructure can be when done right.

We're saddened to report that a car struck and killed a woman trying to cross North Federal near Fresh Market.

This is a spot with increasing pedestrian traffic, thanks to the new development on both sides of the street. We reached out to the city this morning to see what it would take to add a crosswalk there.

Do you have any thoughts on what else could be done to prevent this from happening again?

A woman trying to cross Federal Highway near Fresh Market was hit by a car and killed Saturday night. Police were not releasing many details on Sunday.
