According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, members of the LGBTQ community often face discrimination in many areas of their lives, but especially regarding housing status. LGBTQ individuals, especially youth, are highly overrepresented in the homeless population. They face difficulty in trying to find support services, especially since they may be harassed in shelters by peers or staff and therefore feel uncomfortable and unsafe seeking help. In addition, some transgender individuals have even been turned away from shelters solely due to their gender identity, or have been subjected to verbal, physical, and s*xual abuse when forced to stay with members of the s*x they were assigned at birth (especially in the case of transgender women).

BHS is proud to be part of this incredible cohort of nonprofit leaders working together to strengthen governance and increase impact across Broward County. Thank you for the opportunity!

The Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence recently hosted the second session of our Board Leadership Roundtable, a year-long leadership cohort bringing together Board Chairs and Vice Chairs from some of Broward County's leading nonprofit organizations.

Facilitated by Jim Bush, Principal at Winkler Group, this unique peer-learning experience creates a space for board leaders to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and strengthen the governance practices that help their organizations thrive.

We're grateful for the engagement and leadership of representatives from:

• Arc Broward
• Broward Partnership for the Homeless, Inc.
• Broward Housing Solutions
• Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County
• Children's Harbor, Inc.
• Flamingo Gardens
• Gilda's Club South Florida
• Second Chance Society

By investing in board leadership, these organizations are helping build a stronger, more resilient nonprofit sector for Broward County.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

At BHS, we also recognize the ongoing challenges many veterans face after returning home, including mental health struggles, housing instability, and difficulties reintegrating into civilian life.

Established in 2012, our Home for the Brave Program was created to provide veterans with affordable, secure, and permanent housing paired with supportive services. The program serves veterans living with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI), including PTSD, Major Depression Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Schizophrenia.

We believe no veteran should have to fight another battle alone, especially the battle for stable housing and dignity.

This Memorial Day, we honor those we have lost by continuing to support those who served.

Happy World Baking Day 🍪💛

There’s something special about baking, whether it’s sharing cookies with your kids, celebrating a milestone, or simply enjoying a quiet moment at home.

But for many families, moments like these aren’t always possible.

When housing costs take up the majority of a household’s income, there’s often little left for essentials like groceries, let alone the simple joy of baking something from scratch.

That’s why affordable housing matters.

At Broward Housing Solutions, residents pay just 30% of their income toward rent. That means more room in the budget for food, healthcare, transportation, and yes, even the ingredients to bake and create memories at home.

Because a stable, affordable home doesn’t just provide shelter…
It creates space for nourishment, connection, and everyday moments that make a house feel like home.

🍰 Today, we’re celebrating more than baking, we’re celebrating stability, dignity, and the ability to thrive.

Meet 'Yolanda'

Prior to entering BHS’s Affordable Housing Program, Yolanda and her children were living in a hotel after she made the difficult decision to leave an abusive relationship. Despite the instability, Yolanda remained focused on her family’s future, ensuring her children stayed engaged in school and extracurricular activities. She continued transporting her daughter to basketball practices and training, which ultimately led to her daughter earning a basketball scholarship to Florida Atlantic University.

After securing stable housing through BHS, Yolanda was able to rebuild her life and pursue employment aligned with her passion, obtaining a position as an assistant basketball coach. Stable housing also allowed her family to thrive. Yolanda's oldest daughter was accepted into Nova Southeastern University’s neuroscience program. Her story demonstrates how housing stability, combined with supportive services, empowers families to overcome crisis, achieve educational success, and build long-term self-sufficiency.

May the 4th Be With You ✨
In every great story, there’s a turning point… a moment where hope wins.

At Broward Housing Solutions, we see those moments every day.
They look like a key in someone’s hand for the first time.
A veteran finally able to sleep safely.
A young adult aging out of foster care stepping into independence.
A senior finding peace and stability after years of uncertainty.

For individuals and families living with mental illness and homelessness, the journey can feel overwhelming, but no one should have to face it alone.

Through permanent supportive housing, we help people move from crisis to stability… from surviving to truly thriving.

Because a safe home isn’t just shelter, it’s the foundation for healing, recovery, and a future filled with possibility.

✨ This May the 4th, join us in being a force for good.
Together, we can turn hope into reality.

The Denim Day story began in Italy 1992, when an 18-year old girl was r***d by the 45-year old driving instructor who was taking her to her very first driving lesson. He took her to an isolated road, pulled her out of the car, removed her jeans and forcefully r***d her.

She reported the r**e and the perpetrator was arrested and prosecuted. He was then convicted of r**e and sentenced to jail. Years later, he appealed the conviction claiming that the s*x was consensual, leading the Italian Supreme Court to overturn the conviction and release the perpetrator. A statement from the Court argued that because the victim was wearing very tight jeans, she had to help remove them, and by removing the jeans it was not r**e but consensual s*x. This became known throughout Italy as the “jeans alibi.”

Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament launched a protest wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. This protest was picked up by international media which inspired the California Senate and Assembly to do the same on the steps of the Capitol in Sacramento. Patti Occhiuzzo Giggans, Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, saw this in the media and thought everyone should be wearing jeans to protest all of the myths about why women and girls are r***d. Thus, Denim Day in LA was born. The first Denim Day in LA event was held in April 1999, and has continued annually since.
