This Labor Day, we’re talking about more than jobs, we’re talking about opportunity.

Employment and income can play an important role in long-term housing stability, but the path toward greater financial independence looks different for every person.

At BHS, our work doesn’t stop when someone has a place to call home. Through individualized support and connections to community resources, we help residents identify opportunities to increase income, explore employment and education, access eligible benefits, strengthen life skills, and work toward their personal goals.

Because sometimes the first step toward finding a job, returning to school, or planning for the future is having the stability of knowing where you’ll sleep tonight.

This Labor Day, we celebrate workers throughout our community, and every BHS resident taking steps toward greater stability, independence, and opportunity.

September is National Recovery Month.

What does housing have to do with recovery? More than you might think.

When someone is worried about where they will sleep, how they will pay rent, or whether they will have to move again, focusing on mental health, wellness, employment, education, and long-term goals becomes much more difficult.

This Independence Day, we're honoring the veterans who served our country by helping them find a place to call home.

After serving six years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, Carlos never imagined he would struggle to afford housing in retirement. Like many veterans living on a fixed income, rising housing costs left him without a stable home.

Through the partnership between Broward Housing Solutions and Mission United, Carlos found permanent supportive housing, and with it, renewed hope, independence, and healing.

"Having my own place again has made all the difference." ❤️

Today, Carlos enjoys volunteering at his local humane society, spending time with his emotional support dog, Gizmo, and embracing the stability every veteran deserves.

This Fourth of July, we celebrate freedom by honoring those who defended it and recommitting ourselves to ensuring every veteran has a safe place to call home.

According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, members of the LGBTQ community often face discrimination in many areas of their lives, but especially regarding housing status. LGBTQ individuals, especially youth, are highly overrepresented in the homeless population. They face difficulty in trying to find support services, especially since they may be harassed in shelters by peers or staff and therefore feel uncomfortable and unsafe seeking help. In addition, some transgender individuals have even been turned away from shelters solely due to their gender identity, or have been subjected to verbal, physical, and s*xual abuse when forced to stay with members of the s*x they were assigned at birth (especially in the case of transgender women).

The Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence recently hosted the second session of our Board Leadership Roundtable, a year-long leadership cohort bringing together Board Chairs and Vice Chairs from some of Broward County's leading nonprofit organizations.

Facilitated by Jim Bush, Principal at Winkler Group, this unique peer-learning experience creates a space for board leaders to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and strengthen the governance practices that help their organizations thrive.

We're grateful for the engagement and leadership of representatives from:

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

At BHS, we also recognize the ongoing challenges many veterans face after returning home, including mental health struggles, housing instability, and difficulties reintegrating into civilian life.

Established in 2012, our Home for the Brave Program was created to provide veterans with affordable, secure, and permanent housing paired with supportive services. The program serves veterans living with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI), including PTSD, Major Depression Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Schizophrenia.

We believe no veteran should have to fight another battle alone, especially the battle for stable housing and dignity.

This Memorial Day, we honor those we have lost by continuing to support those who served.
