EXPAND THE CIRCLE.

Last week, the Leadership Broward Board came together for our annual Board Retreat and to kick off what promises to be an exciting year ahead.

A big thank you to Eric Vainder and Northern Trust for hosting us and providing a wonderful setting for an afternoon of connection, conversation and ideas.

We were also fortunate to have Scott Garvis of Dale Carnegie Training join us for a great session on the power of telling our story—because the better we tell the Leadership Broward story, the more people we can inspire to lead, serve and get involved in our community.

Our Board Chair, Joshua Levenson, did a GREAT job leading the afternoon and introducing his theme for the 2026–2027 Board year:

EXPAND THE CIRCLE.

Josh challenged us to think about how we can expand the circle of leadership throughout Broward County—and to reflect on our own leadership superpowers and how we can use them to make that circle even bigger.

One of the quotes Josh shared throughout the retreat captured the idea perfectly:

“Proactive people focus their efforts in the Circle of Influence. They work on things they can do something about. The nature of their energy is positive... enlarging and magnifying, causing their Circle of Influence to increase.”
— Stephen Covey

And another reminded us why we do it:

"I do not know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” – Albert Schweitzer

That's a pretty good challenge for all of us.

As we begin another year of developing, connecting, and inspiring leaders throughout our community, let's keep asking ourselves:

Who else can we bring into the circle?

Here’s to a great year ahead.

Let’s Expand the Circle!

YLB CLASS 40 IS OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY!

“We Write Our Story.”

And what a first chapter!

Two incredible days of connection, challenges, leadership, and team-building have officially launched Youth Leadership Broward Class 40 and set the stage for an unforgettable year.

Broward, get ready. The future looks bright!

A huge thank you to Lauren Formica, Program Chair, for her outstanding leadership and dedication, and to Nicolas Jaramillo, Program Vice Chair, for his invaluable support and commitment to this transformative program.
We’re also grateful to Katherine Wilson, Community Project Chair, who will help guide our students as they take on one of our favorite YLB challenges: Find a problem. Solve a problem. Make an impact.

And a special shoutout to our retreat champion, Francis Jay Caputo, for once again making the experience engaging, challenging, meaningful, and unforgettable!

Thank you to NSU for both sponsoring and hosting Day 1, and to Broward College Tigertail Lake Recreational Center for hosting Day 2 and giving our students the opportunity to build trust, strengthen connections, and discover what they can accomplish together.

YLB Class 40, this is YOUR story to write.

Lead boldly. Serve generously. Build relationships. Make an impact.

Chapter One is complete. We can’t wait to see what you write next!

What happens when community leaders come together with purpose?

Lives change.

This year, Leadership Broward Class XLIV partnered with eight outstanding nonprofit organizations across Broward County through our Community Project Program, dedicating hundreds of volunteer hours, strategic thinking, creativity, and leadership to strengthen organizations serving our community.

Our Class XLIV nonprofit partners included:

• Ballplayers Foundation — Team Hardcore Sluggers
• Business for the Arts of Broward— Team Vivid Broward
• ChildNet, Inc. — Team Haven Heroes
• Children's Harbor, Inc. — Team Harbor Heroes
• Feeding South Florida — Team Silver Connectors
• The Caring Place at Broward Outreach Center — Team Renew Crew
• The Dan Marino Foundation — Team Sunday Funday
• Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. — Team Empower Us

One of these projects recently received media attention when Team Haven Heroes partnered with ChildNet to renovate an emergency placement home for children entering foster care. The project transformed a house into a welcoming home for youth facing some of life's most difficult circumstances and serves as a powerful reminder of what can happen when leadership meets service.

A special thank you to our Community Project Chairs — Nicole Almeida, Allan Altschuler, Ashley Bencivenga, Nancy Woodfill, and Robin Tierney — whose mentorship, guidance, and unwavering support helped make these projects possible.

Now it's time to begin creating the next chapter of impact.

Leadership Broward is now accepting Community Project Applications for Class XLV.

If your nonprofit organization is looking for a team of dedicated community leaders to help advance a meaningful project between October 2026 and May 2027, we encourage you to apply.

Eligible organizations must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or government agency serving Broward County residents.

LB Class XLIV experienced an incredible Criminal Justice Day yesterday—thanks to the outstanding leadership of our Day Chairs: Melinda Blostein, Wayne Boulier, Ra Shana Dabney-Donovan, Michael Dutko, Nadine Girault, Julio Gonzalez, and Ella Phillips.

The day began at Broward College IPS, where the class heard valuable leadership insights from the Day Chairs.

This was followed by a rare, behind-the-scenes tour of the Broward County Main Jail. A huge thank you to the dedicated Deputies and Main Jail Leadership team for making this eye-opening experience possible.

One of the day’s most impactful exercises was the Public Defender’s Mock Courtroom, featuring The Honorable Judge Ari Porth, Chief Assistant Public Defender Melinda Blostein, and Assistant State Attorney Sarahnell Murphy. The bond exercise gave the cohort a deeper, real-world understanding of the system and the difficult decisions that impact lives every day. This interactive session brought the courtroom to life and deepened the cohort’s understanding of justice, advocacy, and due process.

Next up, the class was welcomed by Julio Gonzalez, Chief of the Public Corruption Unit at the State Attorney’s Office, where he led a powerful panel offering deep insights into the legal system and its challenges.

Thank you to our panelists:
The Honorable Judge Elijah Williams, 17th Judicial Court in Florida
The Honorable Judge Betsy Benson, County Court Judge
Harold Pryor, State Attorney, 17th Judicial Court in Florida
Melisa McNeil, Chief Assistant Public Defender of Major Crimes Division, Broward County Public Defender’s Office
Housan Lafrance, Private Attorney, Houson R. Lafrance P.A

And a warm shout-out to our Coffee Break Sponsor, Nicklaus Children’s Health System, for keeping us fueled and focused throughout the day!
