Angel J. Montes, DHCA, is changing the way brain health and dementia information reaches the people in his community who need it most. Not by creating new programs, but by integrating awareness into the public health systems his community already knows and trusts.

Through the Alzheimer's Association's Healthy Brain Initiative Road Map Strategist Program, Dr. Montes and his team at the City of Laredo (TX) Health Department have embedded brain health into the fabric of everyday life, making it a priority for their community. They have added brain health messaging to city utility bills, built dementia education into Food Handler License training, and introduced dementia response training for new Laredo Police Department officers

“Even a single point of awareness can help someone feel more prepared, more supported and less alone,” he shared. “Meaningful public health work often requires patience, consistency and a willingness to keep an idea moving forward.”

Dementia doesn’t always begin with memory loss.

Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) can affect personality, behavior and the ability to speak or understand language. Behavior changes are often the first noticeable symptoms of its most common form.

FTD refers to a group of disorders caused by progressive nerve cell loss mainly in the brain's frontal lobes, the areas behind your forehead, and/or the temporal lobes — the regions behind your ears.

David Dickinson's mother Sheila loved to travel, bake and volunteer. She raised her children on her own and later loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She made plans for retirement, but that "plan went sideways with Alzheimer's," her son David shared. "But she was a strong woman. She loved fiercely…she was Mom and Nana."

In the late 2010s, David was living 250 miles away when signs of the disease began to appear. It was his aunt, Sheila's sister, and her daughter Laura who first noticed something was wrong. Sheila was forgetting words and recipes, and she struggled to follow conversations. She died from Alzheimer’s in 2024.

Losing his mother to the disease was a wake-up call for David. Three of his mother’s siblings have had Alzheimer's and that family history weighed on him. To reduce his risk, he overhauled his diet and leaned into the outdoor lifestyle he loves—hiking, kayaking and biking.

But lifestyle changes weren't enough. David wanted to do more, so he joined a Walk to End Alzheimer's committee. "This is something that I can do to pay it forward. I'm afraid of Alzheimer's, so anything I can do to promote Walk, education, awareness, research, I'm all on board."

When Lili's daughter Olivia was born with Down syndrome, Alzheimer's disease was the last thing on her mind. That change...

When Lili's daughter Olivia was born with Down syndrome, Alzheimer's disease was the last thing on her mind. That changed when Olivia was around 10 years old and the family attended a conference for families impacted by Down syndrome. A session on Alzheimer's risk stopped Lili in her tracks.

"I had heard she was at higher risk for Alzheimer's, but at the time it felt like something far away," Lili said. "That's when it sunk in."

According to the National Down Syndrome Society, about 30% of people with Down syndrome who are in their 50s have Alzheimer’s. About 50% of people with Down syndrome in their 60s have the disease.

For the last 20 years, Lili and her family have responded to that reality the only way they know how, by showing up. Both Lili and Olivia have enrolled in research studies related to cognition, aging and Down syndrome. Olivia’s parents also participate in Walk to End Alzheimer's every year.

Now 34, Olivia lives independently in supportive housing and continues learning new things. "There's a huge range of challenges for people with Down syndrome, just like the general population. Olivia has blown us away."
