partnered with Congressman Wiley who represents NC in Congress, and his team to host local and state elected officials to discuss Fair Maps for NC and nationally.
Part 2 of the town hall featured Rev. John Blackshire, PhD on the topic of Genuine Justice: Intersectional Tools for Everyday Life.
Intersectionality has become a buzzword thrown around to signal political standing. But what exactly is intersectionality, and how can we use it to accomplish our goals of liberation and justice? Further, what are the connections between everyday life and intersectionality? This town hall explored and answers these questions and more. Upon completion, participants will walk away with the following:
• A firm understanding of intersectionality as a theory and method
• Knowing the difference between racism, discrimination, and prejudice
• An articulation of their social location and standpoint in life
• A firm understanding of historical systematic oppression
• Tangible strategies of coalition building
The town hall explored the social, historical, and cultural constructions of gender, race, class, sexuality, ability, nationality, etc. in the United States, particularly from the vantage point of groups that have traditionally been on the margins or border of “mainstream” society.
