As technology changes the tasks people perform, we can ask a deeper question:

“What do I want my presence in this world to contribute?”

Perhaps it is helping someone feel included, nurturing a garden, mentoring a young person, or creating something beautiful.

🤖🌍 Who controls AI—and who protects the rest of us?

A conversation with a coding engineer friend raised an important question: if countless people and organizations can develop, customize, and operate AI, can we establish shared rules for its use?

AI is not one worldwide mind. Different systems have different owners, operators, capabilities, and restrictions. Using AI, building an app with it, and controlling an underlying model are different things.

But however many people operate AI, one principle should remain:

Our technology should respect human dignity, animal well-being, and the Earth that sustains us.

We cannot prevent every misuse. Yet difficulty enforcing a standard does not make that standard unnecessary. We still need clear responsibilities, safeguards, and accountability.

I believe responsible AI should include:

• Protection against exploitation, harmful deception, and discrimination.
• Stronger oversight when people’s lives, rights, or livelihoods are at stake.
• Attention to animal welfare and environmental consequences.
• Transparency about who operates a system and whose interests it serves.
• Ways to challenge harmful decisions and seek correction or repair.

These responsibilities should apply to powerful companies and governments as well as individual developers.

AI can expand access to knowledge and opportunity. It can also concentrate power. The outcome depends on the choices we make—and who gets a voice in making them.

An answer can sound convincing because it agrees with what we already believe.

With AI offering quick explanations and suggestions, we have an opportunity to practice thoughtful questions:

“How do we know?”
“What might be missing?”
“What would change my mind?”

Independent thinking does not mean figuring everything out alone. It means remaining an active participant in our own judgment.

Search for Common Ground helps people work across divides. Peace Direct supports local peacebuilders. Seeds of Peace teaches dialogue and leadership to young people. Nonviolent Peaceforce works with communities to protect civilians.

Their work raises a question for GEA:

What can we learn from people who have been practicing peace for years, and how can we apply one lesson in our own community?

At our next Mastermind, bring one peacebuilding organization, project, or person you would like us to learn about. You are also welcome to come listen and discover someone new.

Peacebuilding can mean showing up to help keep people safe.

Nonviolent Peaceforce works with communities affected by violent conflict, using unarmed approaches to protect civilians and prevent violence.

This work reminds us that peace takes preparation, relationships, courage, and attention to what people on the ground need.

Most of us will never do this work in a conflict zone. But we can ask a question close to home: Who feels unsafe or unheard in our community, and who is already working to support them?



Protecting people without weapons

Nonviolent Peaceforce works alongside communities to protect civilians through unarmed strategies. Its methods include protective presence and accompaniment, shaped with local communities.

Around the world, people are doing more than wishing for peace. They are helping neighbors talk across differences, supporting local leaders, teaching young people to navigate conflict, and protecting people facing violence.

Seeds of Peace brings young people from different backgrounds into dialogue. Its programs make room for personal stories, listening, trust, and action on issues affecting their communities.

Young people can learn how to meet differences with curiosity.

Seeds of Peace creates spaces where young people from different backgrounds share their experiences, listen to one another, and practice dialogue.

Imagine how our communities might change if more of us learned these skills early—and kept practicing them as adults.

October 1 — Finding common ground

Peace begins when we can face a problem together.

Search for Common Ground works with people on different sides of conflict. Its approach asks them to look for shared interests, build trust, and find solutions they can work on together.

That gives us something to consider in our own lives: When a conversation becomes “us against them,” can we pause and ask, “What do we both care about?”

Finding common ground does not require us to agree about everything. It gives us a place to begin.
