You’ve seen the research. Now, we’re putting it into action. 💜

The AMA Alliance Physician Family Experience Survey gave us an important look at what life alongside medicine can mean for spouses, partners, and families. The findings reinforced something the Alliance has long understood: physician well-being is family well-being.

That is why we are launching the 2026–2027 Physician Family Wellness Series, a six-part virtual series designed to address some of the challenges physician families face and connect our community with experts, practical resources, and meaningful support.

We begin October 15 with a topic that can be especially difficult for families to navigate:

The Sick Physician: How Physician Health Programs Heal Doctors and Their Families

Chris Bundy, MD, MPH and Linda Bresnahan, MS will discuss Physician Health Programs, mental health and substance use disorders, the barriers that can keep families from seeking help, and the confidential resources available to support both physicians and the people who love them.

What does a career in medicine mean for the family living alongside it? 💜

More than 1,400 physician spouses and partners shared their experiences through the AMA Alliance Physician Family Experience Survey. Those experiences are now part of peer-reviewed research published in BMC Health Services Research.

The findings tell a complex story about relationships, career trade-offs, time together, and what can happen when the demands of medicine repeatedly enter family life.

Swipe through the findings.

• 38% said they would choose a physician as their partner again
• 60% said their own career opportunities had been negatively affected by their partner’s medical career
• 69% reported their physician partner was too tired for desired activities at least weekly
• 69% reported their physician partner was preoccupied with work at home at least weekly
• Only 24% described themselves as “very fulfilled” as a physician spouse or partner in 2023, compared with 55% in 2011

This publication reflects the AMA Alliance’s commitment to listening to physician families, learning from their experiences, and helping bring those voices into the broader conversation about physician well-being, work-life integration, and family support.

You shared. We listened. And now your voices are part of the research. 💜

In 2023, the AMA Alliance invited physician spouses and partners to share their experiences through the Physician Family Experience Survey.

More than 1,400 of you responded.

Today, those experiences are part of the peer-reviewed scientific literature with the publication of new research in BMC Health Services Research. https://doi.org/10.1186/s12913-026-15628-2

For the AMA Alliance, this is about more than publishing a paper. It is about listening to physician families, understanding the challenges they face, and using what we learn to better support our community.

We are also proud of current AMA Alliance members Lori Boies and Lisa Taylor Muehlenbein, whose work helped bring those voices into the scientific literature, along with their fellow researchers and collaborators Kendra Harvey, Elias Ciudad, Tait Shanafelt, and Wayne Sotile. This work began with a vision under the leadership of our 2022–2023 AMA Alliance President Jacqueline Nguyen, Esq. and her Board of Directors. Kendra Harvey helped turn that vision into action by distributing the Physician Family Experience Survey.

To every spouse and partner who took the time to share your experience: thank you. Your voice mattered then, and it continues to matter now.

This research is one more way we can help bring the experiences of physician families into the broader conversation about physician well-being.

And we're just getting started.
