The funeral is on Friday, August 14, 12:00 Noon, at Brown Funeral Home, 306 College St. Elizabethtown with Pastor Sean Ryan to officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow at 1:30 P.M. at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, 2501 N Dixie Blvd, Radcliff, KY. Visitation will be Thursday, August 13, at the funeral home from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. and again on Friday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service.

A Call to Honor One of Kentucky's Heroes 🇺🇸

The Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central (KVCC) respectfully invites our community to attend the committal service for U.S. Army Pvt. Mike R. McDowell, a Kentucky native and World War II hero, as we finally bring him home after more than 80 years.

Pvt. McDowell was only 19 years old when he was killed in action on July 29, 1944, during the Battle of Myitkyina, Burma, while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional)—the legendary Merrill's Marauders. He was declared missing in action, and for decades his family and our nation waited for answers.

On January 29, 2026, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency officially identified his remains, ensuring that this brave Soldier would finally return home to Kentucky with the honor and dignity he earned through his sacrifice.

Now, after more than eight decades, Pvt. McDowell will receive the final tribute he so richly deserves.

This year, the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001 will be a little different.

While Fort Knox will be hosting its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at a different location, the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs and Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central are honored to host our own 25th Anniversary 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony here at the cemetery.

On this solemn occasion, we will come together to remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost, honor the courage of the first responders who ran toward danger, recognize the service and sacrifice of the men and women of our Armed Forces, and reflect on the unity that defined our nation in the days that followed.

To make this ceremony truly meaningful, we are seeking volunteers and community partners who would like to participate. We are especially looking for:

🎵 High school or community bands or Choir to provide patriotic music.
🎤 Vocalists to perform the National Anthem or other patriotic selections.
🎺 Buglers to play Taps.
🇺🇸 Color Guards, JROTC units, Scouts, and other youth organizations.
🤝 Volunteers who would like to assist with the ceremony.
This ceremony is an opportunity for our community to come together and ensure that the events of September 11, 2001—and the heroes who emerged from that day—are never forgotten.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Gate maintenance tonight

Barrier work on Fort Knox's access gates is scheduled for tonight and will be completed prior to morning traffic hours. Commuters traveling to and from Fort Knox this evening should review the following details and plan their routes accordingly.

The inbound and outbound lanes of Chaffee Gate will be closed from 9 to 10 p.m. During this closure, all traffic must detour through Brandenburg Gate, which will be temporarily opened to accommodate the rerouted flow.

Scheduled maintenance on Brandenburg and Wilson Gates will be completed during their normally closed hours to avoid daytime traffic disruptions.

Wilson Gate: Closed Friday, July 3 through Monday, July 6

Brandenburg Gate: Closed Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5

Chaffee (main) Gate: Remains open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Chaffee Avenue’s on-ramps to US 31W (Dixie Highway) remain open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week. To assist with Fort Knox’s Freedom Fest/Salute to the Nation event egress traffic, these ramps will remain open until midnight only on July 4. These on-ramps are NOT to be confused with the Chaffee (main) Gate’s road – Bullion Boulevard – that leads to US 31W.

The Fort Knox Visitor Center remains open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.

🇺🇸 Community Flag Retrieval at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central 🇺🇸

On behalf of the staff at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central (KVCC), we would like to thank everyone who helped place flags on the gravesites of our Veterans for Memorial Day. Your support helped us honor the 8,764 Veterans and 2,523 dependents laid to rest at our cemetery.

We are now asking for the community's assistance one final time as we respectfully retrieve the flags following the Memorial Day observance.
