Today, the Regiment and the Association co-hosted a Stable Call/Meet and Greet at Club 67. The 81st Colonel and XXVIIth RCSM recognized several Troopers and their families as they were inducted into the Honorary Squadron of the Regiment. Those recognized included the Bordelons, Phipps, Candelarias, and Dangs. This was the third of several induction ceremonies taking place this month.

After the formal portion, Troopers and Veterans enjoyed pizza, drinks, and camaraderie while witnessing the unveiling of a standard that was recently discovered in an attic in Hamilton, Massachusetts and just returned to the unit today. Plans are being made to have it inspected, curated and conserved.

What a great day to celebrate the Regiment's 180th Birthday!

A message to all Troopers, past and present, on behalf of the 81st Colonel of the Regiment, COL Brent Chastain, and XXVIIth Regimental Command Sergeant Major, RCSM Brian Michaud:

"For 180 years, the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen has served the Nation with distinction. Whenever the nation has called, generation after generation of Mounted Riflemen have answered, with many offering up their last full measure of devotion to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. From Chapultepec to Rosebud and Jublains to Tal Afar, the Regiment has never failed to answer the call of duty.

Brave Rifles have fought through seismic changes in warfare. In 1942, the 3d Cavalry turned in horses for scout cars and tanks before service in France after D-Day. In 1948, the Regiment reorganized into an Armored Cavalry Regiment for the long twilight struggle of the Cold War. In 2011, the Brave Rifles traded tanks and Bradleys for Strykers. The 180th anniversary of the Regiment may be the last ride of the 3d Cavalry Regiment as a Stryker formation, but it marks only another milestone in the long history of this great formation."

On this day in Regimental history: 19 May 1846

President James K. Polk signs the bill into law authorizing the formation of the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. COL Persifor F. Smith was placed in command as the 1st Colonel of the Regiment.

Thus came into existence a new organization in the United States Army: a Regiment of Riflemen, mounted to provide greater mobility than the Infantry. They would be equipped with Model 1841 percussion rifles to provide greater range and more accurate firepower than the Infantry's muskets or the Dragoon's carbines. The Mounted Riflemen were considered a separate branch of the service at the time and wore green piping with a trumpet as their branch insignia.

Did you know that William 'Buffalo Bill' Cody was the Chief Scout of the 3d US Cavalry Regiment when he was awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry in action at Platte River, Nebraska on May 22, 1872?

Photographed in the early 1910s, this image shows Buffalo Bill during the difficult final stretch of his career, when he was touring the Pacific Northwest as a hired headliner to stabilize a Wild West enterprise that no longer fully belonged to him. Still wearing his trademark fringed jacket and high boots, Cody traveled from town to town for regional fairs, parades, and exhibitions — carrying the legend of the frontier into communities eager for one last glimpse of the man who had defined it. In these years he embodied both resilience and transition: a world‑famous scout performing under other promoters’ banners, yet still determined to keep the spirit of the West alive through sheer presence and showmanship.
