FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Shoshone-Bannock Tribes to host Native astronaut John B. Herrington for Meet & Greet
FORT HALL — The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes are proud to welcome John B. Herrington, Ph.D., of the Chickasaw Nation, and the first Native American astronaut to fly in space, for a special community Meet & Greet and presentation on Wednesday, May 20, at the Shoshone-Bannock Hotel & Event Center.
Herrington is a retired U.S. Navy Commander and NASA Mission Specialist who made history aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. He continues to inspire Native youth and communities through his advocacy for STEM education and the importance of Indigenous representation in science, engineering, and space exploration.
The event will begin with a Meet & Greet from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a presentation by Dr. Herrington from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Both portions of the event are free and open to the public.
The event is sponsored by the State Tribal Education Partnership Grant and the 477 Human Services Department. The goal is to promote educational pathways and inspire the next generation of Native scientists, engineers, and leaders.
“We’re excited to bring Dr. Herrington to our community,” said Jessica James, Education Program Manager. “His story and achievements remind our youth that they belong in every field, including STEM and aerospace.”
For more information, contact Jessica James, M.A., Education Program Manager, at 208-530-9403 or [email protected]
