I’ve been a minister for well over a decade now, and in those sacred years, I’ve been granted the profound honor of preaching funerals. Oh, what a weighty privilege it is—to utter the final words over a life well-lived or quietly endured! I’ve officiated weddings bathed in joy, preached revivals that stirred souls to flame, led outreaches that reached into the shadows, and delivered hundreds upon hundreds of Sunday morning messages that echoed through pews like thunder. But nothing—nothing—stirs my heart quite like preaching a funeral.
This past Thursday, I had the bittersweet honor of preaching my uncle’s funeral. He slipped away at just 60 years old. Truth be told, I didn’t know the man deeply; only fleeting whispers of childhood memories danced in my mind—fragments of laughter, a kind glance, a distant holiday table. Yet, what a trembling gift it was to stand there, speaking kind and honest words over him, weaving a tapestry of closure for our grieving family in the raw week of his passing.
Life… oh, life is a fragile, fleeting gift! We must never, ever forget that. The more funerals I preach, the deeper this truth burrows into my soul: I wonder, with a ache that lingers, what words will be spoken over me when I draw my final breath? Who will gather there? What stories will rise like incense?
A funeral is a mirror of profound reflection—not just for the life of the departed, but for the fragile thread we all cling to in our own. During the interment at the gravesite, we paused—several tender moments, actually—to let friends and family pour out kind words and cherished memories. It was a powerful, heart-wrenching symphony of love… but oh, how I pray we don’t wait until the end! Don’t let the unsaid words fester, the unfelt emotions wither, the unloved hearts ache in silence.
The Bible whispers it true: this life is but a v***r, a blink of an eye. Whether you’re blessed with 100 years or cut short at 50, it races by—so swiftly, so relentlessly. Cherish it, my friends! Live it well, with every passionate beat of your heart!
