During the Rita Pelfrey Memorial Reception, the Distinguished Alumni Awards, Sports Hall of Fame Inductions, and the President’s Special Recognition Award will be presented. The Rita Pelfrey Memorial Reception and will take place on Friday, September 4th, 5:00pm, at the Louisa First Baptist Church Family Center with light finger foods provided.

The Rita Pelfrey Memorial Alumni Reception will take place on Friday, September 4th, 5:00pm, at the Louisa First Baptist Church Family Center. The reception takes the place of banquets that were provided in years past. The reception will allow more time for social interaction between classmates and longtime friends.

Finger foods and drink refreshments will be provided and the reception will be FREE TO ALL. Because it is a reception, no registration or table reservations are necessary.

The Distinguished Alumni of the Year Awards, Sports Hall of Fame Inductions, and President’s Special Recognition Award will be presented during the reception.

This 2026-2027 Academic Year marks the 27th year FGHSAA has awarded scholarships to graduates of Tolsia High School to attend Marshall University. The first scholarship was awarded in the 1999-2000 Academic Year to one student in the amount of $500. Today, FGHSAA provides 8 scholarships each year totaling $24,000 annually. Over the past 27 years, 110 scholarships have been awarded to 46 different recipients totaling $274,557.

The original scholarship name of FGHS Memorial Scholarship was changed recently to the FGHSAA-Richard Plymale Scholarship to honor and recognize original board member Richard Plymale who helped establish the scholarship fund and still serves on the Board of Directors.

Today, the FGHSAA-Richard Plymale Scholarship Fund has grown from the original $500 to a corpus market value of $712,245. This endowment was established to provide future scholarships in perpetuity long after the FGHSAA no longer exists.

Many thanks to the dedicated board members for their hard work over the past 27 years and all that have given money to support this important and meaningful scholarship program.

The FGHSAA Board of Directors is happy to announce that Tolsia High School graduates John and Jessie Jarrell have been selected by Marshall University to be the next FGHSAA- Richard Plymale Scholarship recipients beginning with the 2026-2027 school year. Each will receive $3,000 per year for four years totaling $24,000. John plans to major in business and Jessie in nursing. Congratulations to each of them for their outstanding high school success and future achievements at Marshall University.

The FGHSAA Board of Directors has also selected Valeria “Val” Roberts Ryan, Class of 1948, to receive the 2026 Distinguished Alumnae of the Year Award. Val was part of the original FGHS alumni that created the FGHS Alumni Association and served on the very first Board of Directors. She will be recognized and presented the award at the FGHSAA Rita Pelfrey Memorial Alumni Reception in September.
