The trail crew was back out there this past weekend. On Saturday, they were at two different locations, Elk Lake and Black Kettle on the CATS Trail near Wadhams. Photos by Mark S and Kirsten K.

Trail crew offers all sorts of things; mud, shovels, rocks, carpentry, level, square, and FUN!!! Many thanks to all our volunteers for this work!

We often hear questions about bears. Did you see any? What should I do if I see one? There is a FREE event coming up that may answer all of your questions.

The purpose of the BearWise Field Day is to educate residents, businesses, and visitors on how to live and recreate responsibly in bear country to keep bears wild and people safe. Come join us at the BearWise Field Day to learn about how to live, work, and recreate responsibly in bear country.

A "Murphy's Laws of Climbing" from Ditt to 46ers in October 1984 from the Peter Fish Forest Ranger Collection at the Adirondack Research Library:
1. No matter how far you've climbed, there's always one more bump to go.
2. No matter how much stuff you put in your climbing partner's pack, your own always weighs more.
3. No matter how much food you eat during your trip, your pack always weighs as much or more for the trip out.
4. Regardless of favorable weather predictions at home, the weather will surely turn sour in the mountains.
5. While bushwacking, and whenever you become confused, you discover that your compass is defective and points in the wrong direction.
6. No matter how carefully you protect your food, the bear will find a way to get it.
7. After an all-day bushwack, all the signs on the trail back have
inflated mileages.
8. No matter how serious the drought, there's always mud on the Adirondack trails.
9. It may be deatl calm everywhere else, but there's always a gale blowing on Wright Peak.
10. No matter how early you plan to camp, someone always has the leanto ahead of you.
11. Returning after a tough day climbing, the distance from ~arcy Dam to Adirondak Loj is twice as far as it was in the morning.
12. Regardless of how much blow-down there was during the winter, there is never any firewood at Indian Falls.
13. Invariably, if one accidentally drops some liter; or, pitches camp too close to the stream; or, snaps off some dead branches from a -standing tree - who always pops up out of the bushes but Ranger Peter Fish.

It was on this date in 1937, that Grace Hudowalski #9 became the first woman to climb all 46 High Peaks. It took her 15 years and her last mountain was Esther. She would go on to serve the hiking community in many ways including to today when we continue to strive to be like Grace.

REMINDER THAT THE GRANT SUBMISSION DEADLINE OF SEPTEMBER 1, 2026 IS FAST APPROACHING. Thanks to the generosity of our members, we have funded numerous projects in the past. To be considered, you must meet the deadline.

Go to our website and under About Us Drop Down/Club Information/Financial and scroll toward the bottom you will find Grant Submission Information, Guidelines, and the application. Link is in the comments. All funding proposals must be submitted by September 1st.

Non-profit tax exempt 501(c)(3) organizations, and local, state, or federal agencies or educational institutions are eligible to apply for funding.

Projects selected for a grant must address one or more of the following Adirondack Forty-Sixers, Inc. priorities:
Protecting and preserving the natural resources within the Adirondack Park, with a primary focus on the High Peaks Region, and secondarily, other areas of the Forest Preserve; Promoting the responsible usage of the wilderness areas within the Adirondack Park by the general public; Educating the public on the environmental, geological, and human history of the Adirondack Park environs and its residents, including social history, folklore, and arts and humanities.

I can't wait to get together with fellow hikers that I may have missed over the summer to swap stories over good food, to see who got the President's award, and to hear a great guest speaker. How about you? Did you purchase your tickets yet?
