Ruby 15, CREATURES OF THE LIGHT

In the oasis city of Siddhi Infini, is a secret city called “The Center.” Streets that seem to go in, just circle around. They say The Center is sacred, few outsides have ever entered, but Roadie Kapoor has found a way to sneak on in.

Nightmare Ellie is asked to do a circus act with a cat named “Whiskers.” It’s a dangerous act, because Whiskers is a very large Saber-Tooth, Killer Cat.

In “The Café of Fond Farewell,” Ruby pays tribute to her dear friend, Professor T.J. Teru. Ruby recalls the day T.J. found his old android love, Angel Lips, standing under a street light on the boulevard of forgotten dreams.

ZBS on Instagram

ZBS has a new Instagram account. We post twice a week, Friday and Sunday evenings. We hope to offer some insights into our stories.

Mr. Fulton will be funneling his thoughts into our images. Since he has written the stories we feature, Fulton often thinks about his characters. But writers rarely think the same as their characters. Fulton often wonders, “Why the heck did they say that?”

We’ll have quite a few photos and tales of our recording in different countries - Brazil, the Amazon, Sumatra, Bali, Tangier, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, India, Mumbai, Marrakesh, and the Sahara. Fulton loved to travel around with his recorder, to see what he could catch. The sounds he captured become part of his stories.

There are quite a few photos, especially in the Amazon, Tangier and India. We’ll be adding these. We hope you’ll take a look now and then.

RUBY 14, SPOOKS

It’s taken awhile, quite a while for Mr. Tim to finish the music for Ruby 14, “Spooks of the Ancient Nullians.” Tim Clark lives in the mountains of North Carolina near Asheville and when Helene hit, it wiped out roads and power and houses and lives. Tim is alright, but some of his neighbors aren’t, their houses are gone.

Tim’s studio and house survived. But he still doesn’t have a phone or internet. We heard from Tim two days ago. He said he will finish that last 8 minutes of music we’ve been waiting for, and then we’ll be able to offer Ruby.

It’ll be nice to hear Ruby 14 because it is a mystery and it’s funny. It’s a much needed distraction from our present day reality. There’s a lot more in it than just laughs & smiles, but sometimes that is just what is needed. After all, it is Ruby. If you like her, this is it.

Or will be “it” as soon as we have that last 8 minutes of music. So - Coming Very Soon.

TINY DREAMS

TWO MINUTE FILM NOIR
These are stories about gangsters, bi**os, cons, cops, lovers, losers, platinum blondes in mink coats & high heels, with neon signs reflecting on rain-slicked, big-city streets.

Joey finds out in, All Green Lights to Hell. … A hat check girl dreams of the ways to get even in, A Big Sack of Wind. … Wherever you are, you are being watched in, Nightmare on Stool Pigeon Street. … A man risks his life for a jelly donut in, Dying for a Cup of Joe. … And on and on we go.

A fan wrote: “Wonderful visuals and surprising twists, depth of character and fast-paced adventure. Very well produced fun. I love the recurring theme music that binds it all together. It’s like coming home to Rick’s Cafe once in a while before launching off again.”

90 Second Cellphone Terror Theatre

It’s time for something silly, and this certainly fills the bill. To begin with, the title is spelled wrong. Whoever designed it spelled Theatre as Theater. Fulton was too busy to notice until it came out, and he went “What the (blank blank)?!” He does not like the sound of Thee-ate-er. Maybe because he lived in London for a couple of years and loved to go to the theatre. Small point, but he’s still irked.

These little audio nuggets are tiny gems. Silly gems, true, but they’ll make you smile, maybe even laugh.

Why this Nullian Nuggie? We once gave these out, for free! (I think) But that was long, long ago. Since then, empires have risen and fallen. But not the Nuggie!

Nuggies are the currency of our futuristic Summa Nulla, where Ruby and her little gang of gumshoers, seek and find.

This Nuggie was designed by Jaye Oliver, who did almost all of the ZBS graphics over the last 40 years. That boggles our minds too. Is that possible? She sure did a lot of our catalogs (back when we printed catalogs). She did many of the Ruby and Jack Flanders illustrations too.

But everything and everyone passes on. Jaye passed on last week. God that hurts.

We wanted to show something a little more cheery. Jaye seemed to always be cheery. Fulton knew her back in college, that’s how far back they go. It was a long, long friendship.

Well, with all the pain in the world, you don’t need more from us. So happy Nullian Nuggies to you!

RUBY

Back in the 1960s, Meatball Fulton lived in London. He met Michael, who was from Brooklyn, they rented a house in a borough of London. Michael was studying acting at LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts). Michael said, “You have to see Laura … she is good.”

Laura was studying acting at LAMDA, and Fulton saw her in a Chekov’s play, “The Cherry Orchard.” (Fulton likes Chekov) He watched Laura perform on stage and thought, “My god, she really is good.”

Years later, in 1972, Fulton wrote “The Fourth Tower of Inverness,” and had Laura play The Madonna Vampyra. Then in 1981, when he started writing the Ruby si-fi radio series, he knew just the person to play that tough, kick-ass female detective. Laura is a true New Yorker, and boy there are some tough cookies down there.

Fulton has said this before – “When I was writing Ruby, I’d speak her lines out loud. And I heard Ruby say to me – ‘Just shut and listen.’ Then she said what she wanted to say, and I wrote it down.” Writers often wonder where this stuff comes from. No one knows. But that’s true for all artists.

And now - Fulton sits back and listens - and writes it down.

Oh, Michael went on to be nominated for an Academy Award, Best Supporting Actor, in the Coen Brothers “Baron Fink.”

THE TOOKAH

The Tookah was in the very first Ruby adventure, and in quite a few others too. Different actors voiced The Tookah, because The Tookah keeps getting blown-away. But if you find a suction cup or two, a new Tookah can be grown.

We’re now up to “Tookah Two-Two” (Number 22) and this one may be female, maybe. The reason she/he gets “blown away,” the Tookah is a wheeler-dealer, money launderer, arms smuggler, a hustler who will sell your soul.

Ruby likes The Tookah, she understands him or her. Sometimes he/she helps Ruby … for a fee.

As you can see - there are 4 te****les, 3 eyes, a thin blue mustache, and a red fez. Why a fez? Why 3 eyes? Why te****les? And a blue mustache? Who knows?

Fulton (the writer) is fond of te****les. To watch them move, and fasten on to things with those little suction cups – that is really something. (But never turn your back on a te****le)

The Tookah is fond of women, especially shapely ones. He/she enjoys Ruby’s company. And in “Ruby #12” (coming soon), The Tookah really is trying to be trustful … for a modest fee.

You’ll soon see (hear) The Tookah helping Seymour find the entrance to an ancient “City Beneath a City.” It’s coming soon … for a small fee.

STARS & STUFF Auction!

This weekend is our final ZBS Auction … for audio tapes. These are the Masters, ¼ inch, 2 track stereo, 10.5” reels @ 15 ips. There are 18 tapes.

These are the original Masters. When S&S was first released on radio, it was a ten one-hour series. It had Jack Flanders in “Ah Ha! Phenomena” and the first ever Ruby, “Tired of the Green Menace?” However, when we moved our recording studio, we lost “Ah Ha!” But we do have Ruby’s original “Green Menace.”

There are so many stories in “Stars & Stuff” - Wino Willie, Rocket Pierre (4 stories with Little Frieda), The Tongue That Licked Tucson, Boogie Boogie to the Stars, The Cheese Men of Mars, The Thing That Ate Aunt Sophie, and many more.

If you can bid on S&S, please do. We’ll all be very happy.
