ZBS Foundation ZBS is a not-for-profit arts organization. For 50 years we’ve been producing radio/audio stories. We have been in existence since 1970.

These are comic and cosmic adventures, science fiction, mystical mysteries – some with spiritual wisdoms woven within. For 50 years we've been producing radio/audio stories. H0W LITTLE FREIDA CAME ABOUT
When ZBS first started, back in 1970, we were a group of 15 people who came together to do radio productions. Someone had an inheritance, he bought a farm in upstate New York, it had a couple of houses, garages, barns, and two ponies and one sheep.

The smaller house we converted into a recording studio, and the gang lived in the houses and barns and garages and above the studio. Since it was a big place, friends and their friends, and their friends’ friends, would stop by and stay for a few days.

One day, a young couple came by …
They had been at a rock festival in Atlanta, and they told Meatball (writer) & Bobby (engineer) that at the festival they’d met two people who were from the planet Venus.

(Believe me, this is true)

As they described The Venusians
Meatball and Bobby looked at each other (it’s remarkable how much can be said with a silent stare). The couple said The Venusians had long white hair, pale skin, and wore sun glasses (even at night). (Because light hurts their eyes). But the male-Venusian did remove his glasses to show them his eyes. (Venusians have no pupils in their eyes).

They Were Real Freakin’ Venusians!

So … shortly thereafter
Little Frieda came into being. (She had no pupils, but she could see thought forms)

(I can’t recall if the real Venusians smoked ci**rs or not)

Meatball would write Lil’ Frieda’s lines, and Patty would say something similar. Patty wasn’t just the voice, Little Frieda came out of her.

We Are Surviving Just Fine
Even in these bitter cold northern winters, we have our wooly mittens & booties. And in these gloriously hot-sticky-summers, we have our faithful flip flops and fans. We do have a roof over our heads. We’re not living in a tent. We don’t spend half the night banging on garbage cans to scare the racoons and bears away.

We Are Not Desperate
So why a midsummer fundraiser?
Because that’s what arts organizations do to survive. ZBS was founded in 1970. Having survived for over half a century, we did learn – Try to have fun.

Meatball Fulton has been writing short stories, and long stories, and even tiny little stories. And now, he’s thinking about his old friends, Jack Flanders and Little Frieda.

Fulton’s Unwritten Story
He did have notes on a Jack & Little Frieda story that he never wrote. But he can’t find his notes. So now he’s writing their new story. What it is, or what it will be, he won’t say … or he doesn’t know.

He does have a working title … Softly Absurd. Since that sounds familiar, he has a second working title … Almost-There, A Dream.

SOFTLY ABSURD
It’s not easy to remember my story that I never wrote.

When we moved last fall (after 55 years in the same place) the large dumpster outside was filled with a lot of my old files, old notes and ideas I had for stories I never wrote … including Jack & Little Frieda. But now they too are gone.

You knew that Robert Lorick (voice of Jack) passed on several years ago (2017). But PJ Orte (Pat Anderson), who was the voice of Little Frieda, passed on in April of this year.

Patty is gone.

With all the daily depressing news, I didn’t know how to tell you. Patty was one of the original founders of ZBS. We first met in Berkeley at KPFA, the community radio station. A couple years later, I moved to London. After a couple more years, I moved to Philadelphia, worked at a public radio station there. And then to CHOM-FM in Montreal. CHOM was the first rock & roll radio station in Quebec. The owner let the DJ’s play whatever we wanted. It was truly free-form, good ol’ Rock & Roll Radio.

Since the DJ’s (all guys) ran the station, we decided Saturdays mornings will be more than just music, we’ll bring in some female talent. So I said, I know just the person! but she’s out in California. And someone said, No problem, we’ll fly her in. And so we did.

Up to that point, I had thought of Patty as an artist who didn’t have an artform. But she was quick and smart and she could talk … boy could she talk. A few months later we started ZBS Foundation, we moved from Montreal to a farm in upstate New York. We came together as a group, we built a recording studio, and ZBS is still here.

In the 1980s, the Zeebers scattered, but Patty lived not far away.

And today, when I started to tell you about my story of Jack & Little Frieda (the one I never wrote), this newsletter turned into my explaining that Robert & Patty are gone, but their voices live on.

The characters that Patty and Robert left behind could be recreated with AI. If I were younger, would I? Younger I am not …. they live on in my memory.

But what memory?! Having lost my notes, I can’t remember the story I never wrote.

It’s not Bye-bye Little Frieda. I’m still searching for that story. If I can’t find it, I’ll write a new one.

In the oasis city of Siddhi Infini, is a secret city called “The Center.” Streets that seem to go in, just circle around. They say The Center is sacred, few outsides have ever entered, but Roadie Kapoor has found a way to sneak on in.

Nightmare Ellie is asked to do a circus act with a cat named “Whiskers.” It’s a dangerous act, because Whiskers is a very large Saber-Tooth, Killer Cat.

In “The Café of Fond Farewell,” Ruby pays tribute to her dear friend, Professor T.J. Teru. Ruby recalls the day T.J. found his old android love, Angel Lips, standing under a street light on the boulevard of forgotten dreams.

ZBS has a new Instagram account. We post twice a week, Friday and Sunday evenings. We hope to offer some insights into our stories.

Mr. Fulton will be funneling his thoughts into our images. Since he has written the stories we feature, Fulton often thinks about his characters. But writers rarely think the same as their characters. Fulton often wonders, “Why the heck did they say that?”

We’ll have quite a few photos and tales of our recording in different countries - Brazil, the Amazon, Sumatra, Bali, Tangier, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, India, Mumbai, Marrakesh, and the Sahara. Fulton loved to travel around with his recorder, to see what he could catch. The sounds he captured become part of his stories.

There are quite a few photos, especially in the Amazon, Tangier and India. We’ll be adding these. We hope you’ll take a look now and then.
