Last Thursday, Cathy Chiavetta and I were delighted to receive a tour of Dave Bowden's daylily garden here in Fort Collins. Dave showed us some of his very exciting creations including seedlings exhibiting teeth, a direction that he has been focusing on recently. Just beautiful! The following photos come from our visit and from Dave directly. Enjoy!

Monday mornings, I've been having great fun volunteering as a guide in the Butterfly House at GOSC. (If you've never viewed the butterflies, it's a great place to bring visitors, grandchildren, etc.). I usually knock off at noon and then head around the main building to our Daylily Display Garden. There, I devour a PB&J for lunch while sitting on one of the benches and then spend the next 30-60 minutes weeding the plot or whatever needs to be done. Last Monday, I found that the weeding took about ten minutes maximum (I wonder if Bev has been weeding on a regular basis too? If so, thank you, Bev!). The dicot weeds were minimal. Most of my time was instead focused on removing that nasty, invasive grass (see attached photo). It occurs mostly close to 'Stella de Oro' at the front of the main bed and then again near 'Plant Max' at the back of that bed.

Our 140-plus cultivars have with one exception ('Bumble Bee Blues') gotten through the winter very well, although quite a few exhibited spring sickness. There are scapes galore! The newly planted Stella (thanks, Missy!) has had many blooms already, and 'Roses in Snow' will be the next to bloom. There has been no need for irrigation yet as we've had plenty of rain at GOSC. The staff person working with us this year is Lindsay, who has tested the irrigation system, and all is ready to go! So, I concluded my visit to the Display Gardenthis week by removing some of the unsightly leaves caused by spring sickness.

When is peak bloom time this year? I'm not a betting man, but I'd say we should have a good show in two weeks. I'll keep you updated after my visit next Monday! If you'd be willing to help with the weeding/deadheading efforts this summer, we'd love to have your help. Please contact Susie (319-330-6465) for more information. Thank you, and best wishes for your gardening season!

March 11, 2023, NCDC Meeting Minutes
(draft)

Attending at the McKee Building at the Ranch: Susie, Jonathan, Sherri, Cherri, Elaine, Curt, Dolores, Cathy. On Zoom, Deb.

Susie convened the meeting after an excellent class on Roses by Roger Heins. Thanks to Susie for arranging.

Old Business:
The new plant markers are ready to install at the GOSC. Susie passed around copies of the color brochure she created about our club. We will have some to hand out at our table at the Berthoud
Historical Plant sale on May 13th (9 am -noon) at Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum, 224 Mountain Ave Berthoud. We need volunteers for this.

Elaine has been in contact with Dave. He is doing OK but probably won’t attend much and does not expect to need much gardening help from us.

Connie will be stepping back from club activities for a while to spend more time with her family.

All present were asked to update their contact information on the sheets Susie passed around. She will call those not in attendance to continue to clean up our membership list.

New Business:
Discussion of a July Daylily class at Gardens at Spring Creek with tour. Deb and Jonathan are good options for presenters. Adding Zoom participants was discussed but thought to be better skip Zoom for this indoor/outdoor class but use it for future daylily classes. Where appropriate, we could invite garden clubs and coordinate through Allison O’Conner to invite Master Gardeners from five counties through Zoom.

Upcoming learning opportunities:
“Perennials for Pollinators”. Presenter – Alison O’Conner, CSU Extension Larimer County Saturday, April 29 – 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the McCarty-Fickel Home Museum (645 7th St., Berthoud). Hosted by the Berthoud Historical Society Garden.

“Spring Rose Care and Pruning Demonstration” with Roger Heins. Saturday, May 20 – 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the McCarty-Fickel Home Museum in Berthoud. Hosted by the Berthoud Historical Society Garden Group.

Mondays at the Loveland Library, organized by CSU Master Gardeners – free and open to the public. 12:00 - 1:00 pm
● April 3: Susan Bonsall - Low Water Vegetable Gardening
● April 10: Bev Shaw - Embracing Colorado Gardening
● April 17: Roger Heins - Companion Plants for Roses
● April 24: Deb Courtner - Gardening for Our Insect Friends
● May 1: Tony Koski - Water Saving Tips for Your Lawn

Club Calendar:
We will need volunteers for our May clean up and for maintenance throughout the summer at our display garden at GOSC.
Business meeting – April 29
Open gardens – July
Plant swap – August – Poulton home

Meeting adjourned.

Next meeting will be on Saturday, April 29th from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the McCarty-Fickel Home Museum in Berthoud (645 7th St., Berthoud) following the 10:00 class. See class information above.

Respectfully submitted,

February 5, 2023, NCDC Meeting Minutes
(draft)

Attending at Missy’s home: Missy, Curt, Dolores, Cherri, Marcia, Elaine, Sherri, Holly, Susie, Jonathan, and Cathy.

Old Business:
The Treasurer reported a healthy balance.

New Business:
Susie agreed to take on the role of President and Cathy will move to Secretary/ Treasurer. Motioned by Cherri and approved unanimously.

We discussed writing by-laws and including that officers should be reaffirmed every 3 years.

We discussed that our region still needs a president and for now Jacob Braun is our contact for national matters.

We discussed helping Dave in his garden. Elaine will chat with him and see what he would like. Could coordinate with our plant swap gathering.

Jonathan will think about spring cleanup dates.

Facebook issues are ongoing. Holly is working on them. She has created a new group page that we should all go to. Search Northern Colorado Daylily and choose the page with the dark Daylily. She is working on the problems with our FB so we can announce our events.

NOCO Bloom is published 4 times per year, and we can get our events mentioned there if we set dates far enough in advance
to meet their timelines.

Susie has a rough draft of our club brochure. Holly mentioned we should have a QR code to direct people to our club
information, perhaps on a laminated poster that we can display on an easel at events. The GOSC has an easel that we can use. Elaine volunteered to go to GOSC sale with the poster.

Sherri recommended contacting Bob at Iris4you about a future class.

We discussed locations to have meetings and classes including fire stations at Centerra and Timberline as well as the McCarty-Fickel House. Cherri has classes scheduled at Loveland Library. Details in March.

Cathy will check on Kate and Margaret since we have not heard from them in a while.

Our next meeting will be March 11th.

Respectfully submitted,

Cathy

Three weeks ago, I planted my daylily seeds. They'd been stored over the winter hidden behind the lettuce in the crisper drawer of my refrigerator. For 15 years, I'd been using starter mixes that contained peat and, as a result, there were fungus gnats everywhere! It's hard to focus on playing the piano, watch the next installment of Yellowstone, or eat dinner when you have fungus gnats disrupting your vision! So, I took the sage advice of Mary Baker, a daylily hybridizer friend from ADS Region One, who had posted on her page a seed starter mix consisting only of coir and perlite. It is fantastic! I highly recommend it! She uses Miracle-Gro Perlite (8 quart bags) and Gardener's Eco-co coir bricks. (Mix one bag of perlite with the coir obtained by letting one brick expand in just less than a gallon of lukewarm water). Germination rates were in excess of 90%, and the seedlings look really healthy. I use multicolored LED lights to promote growth. I use 72-well flats, planting seeds in 71 wells. I chop the bottom off the 72nd well to allow me to easily bottom-water through that well. Thank you, Mary!

Hoping you'll enjoy this glimpse of which daylily cultivars we have at our Display Garden at the Gardens of Spring Creek (Fort Collins). Not much sign of green there yet, but Spring is just around the corner, and our lilies will take off! The cultivars will have new signage that we purchased last fall in collaboration with GOSC.
