Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed - CPRW

Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed - CPRW Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed (CPRW) is a 501(c)3 non-profit based in Fort Collins, CO.

CPRW's Vision: A health and resilient Cache la Poudre Watershed. In the summer of 2012, the High Park and Hewlett Gulch wildfires burned almost 90,000 acres of the Poudre Watershed. The scale and intensity of the wildfires brought people from local water utilities, natural resource agencies, local non-profits, and businesses together to plan and prioritize post fire restoration needs. Initially kn

own as the High Park Restoration Coalition, the group eventually formalized and became the Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed (CPRW) in 2013. CPRW works across the entire Poudre watershed from headwaters to the confluence with the South Platte River on issues relating to rivers, forest resilience and wildfire mitigation.

We're so excited to have Dr. Emily Fairfax presenting at this month's Leave it to the Beavers speaker series! 🦫🪵🔥

Join us June 25, 6–8pm at Colorado State University (CHEM A103) to hear Dr. Fairfax present "Beavers: Architects of Wildfire Resistance" - showing how partnering with beaver ecosystem engineering may be one of our most effective tools for building drought- and fire-resistant landscapes across the American and Canadian West.

Space is limited and registration is required. Learn more and RSVP at: www.poudrewatershed.org/beavers2026

📸 (L to R) CPRW's Executive Director, Hally Strevey, with Dr. Fairfax, at our Upper Elkhorn Creek stream restoration project in the Cameron Peak burn area.

Thank you to the Morrison Riverscapes Lab and the Intermountain West Transformation Network for co-hosting this event!

About the Leave it to the Beavers series
This speaker series, co-hosted by Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV), the Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed (CPRW), Larimer Conservation District (LCD) and Rocky Mountain Flycasters (RMF) brings together experts, enthusiasts, and community members passionate about the important role beavers play in creating resilient ecosystems. In addition, learn about low-tech, process-based restoration projects in the Poudre Watershed that are improving habitat and encouraging the return of beavers.

Since 2019, CPRW, in partnership with the USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) and Colorado Department of Health & Environment, has been running a Community Science Water Quality Monitoring Program in the Upper Poudre Watershed.

On a monthly basis from June - October, trained volunteers collect field samples that are analyzed in Dr. Charles Rhoades' RMRS biogeochemistry lab - science powered by community members!

🔬What we're tracking:

● Baseline water quality in high-priority reaches
● Prescribed fire and forest thinning impacts on source water
● Long-term recovery from the Cameron Peak Fire
● River restoration outcomes — before and after

Wildfire is reshaping our forests and our waterways. This program helps us understand those changes and guide smarter restoration decisions for the watershed we all depend on.

We brewed a beer and today we are going to tap it and taste it - join us!

Little Cache Kernza Rye Ale was brewed by Horse & Dragon Brewing Company, Odell Brewing Co and New Belgium Brewing (with a little help from CPRW stff) to celebrate and elevate the mission of the Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed (CPRW). This beer features kernza (a native Colorado grain!) grown at Native Hill Farm and malted by Troubadour Maltings, and rye and barley grown at Olander Farms and malted by Root Shoot Malting. This beer is balanced yet flavor-forward, with a delicious combination of kernza nuttiness and rye spice. A clean finish and smooth mouthfeel remind you that you're enjoying beer made with the amazing water from the Poudre River Watershed!

ABV: 5.7%

Join us for a progressive release party TODAY, June 8, from 2-5pm. We’ll have a toast at each of the breweries:

🍺2:00 p.m. at New Belgium Brewing Co.
🍺3:00 p.m. at Odell Brewing Co.
🍺4:00 p.m. at Horse & Dragon Brewing Co.

What’s in a name? We named this beer after the Little Cache La Poudre Ditch that supplies water from the Poudre River to Native Hill Farm where the kernza grain is grown. Enjoy that Poudre River Water with every sip!

🏡🔥Larimer County and the Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed have launched the Home Ignition Zone Mitigation Assistance Program (HIZ MAP), giving eligible homeowners in Cherokee Meadows, Crystal Lakes, Glacier View, and Poudre Canyon access to up to $4,000 in wildfire mitigation work on their property.

That means real defensible space work - vegetation management, fuel reduction - with contractor coordination handled through the program.

Getting started takes three steps:
1️⃣ Schedule a free Home Ignition Zone Assessment with your local fire department
2️⃣ Determine your eligibility for HIZ MAP
3️⃣ Apply online

Note: applying doesn’t guarantee assistance, and the program does not cover home-hardening improvements like roofing or vents. But if you’ve been putting off your defensible space work, this is the support to make it happen.

This , we're thinking about everything our forests quietly do for us. Nearly one in three Americans gets their drinking water from the small, headwater streams that begin in national forests. National forests provide the source water for 3,400 communities and 60 million Americans. Here's how:

🌲 Tree canopies slow rainfall, reducing runoff and erosion
🍂 Forest soils filter contaminants before they reach rivers
❄️ Forests regulate snowpack, our most critical freshwater reserve in the West
🐟 Shade and root systems keep streams cool and healthy for aquatic life

In the Cache la Poudre Watershed, forest health directly impacts water quality for hundreds of thousands of Northern Colorado residents. Wildfires, invasive species, and drought are putting these systems under pressure.

Investing in the stewardship of our national forests is an invest in our water security.
