A few days ago, we shared that our sweet Ophelia had been rushed to the vet after suddenly becoming unable to stand. We’re happy to report that she is now back with her herd, and we’re keeping a close eye on her while also developing a nutrition plan for the entire herd. Many of our goats are seniors, and as they age, we want to make sure they maintain healthy body condition and continue to thrive.

In Ophelia’s original post, we mentioned that we were also dealing with a second emergency. That emergency is our beloved Boris.

Boris is one of our fainting goats and has been slowly developing arthritis over the past few years. Recently, however, we noticed he was struggling much more than usual. After veterinary evaluation, we learned that Boris has a luxating patella in his left rear leg. Unfortunately, this isn’t something that can be corrected without surgery.

Many local veterinarians are familiar with this procedure in dogs, but for a goat, our best option will likely be Colorado State University Veterinary Hospital. At the moment, we are waiting patiently, as CSU is in the process of opening its new livestock facility.

In the meantime, Boris is enjoying some special treatment at a foster home alongside Annie, another goat who has mobility challenges of her own. He’s being thoroughly spoiled with bananas, berries, premium hay, and, of course, plenty of kisses.

As much as we wish otherwise, we know that situations like Ophelia’s and Boris’s will become more common as our herd continues to age. We are constantly adapting, learning, and improving our care to ensure every animal receives the support they need throughout every stage of life.

This work is only possible because of our community. Your volunteer hours, donations, and encouragement allow us to provide specialized veterinary care, nutritional support, and safe places for animals like Boris and Ophelia to heal.

And right now, we need that support more than ever.

Thank you for standing with our sanctuary family and helping us give these animals the care they deserve. ❤️

Sweet Ophelia has had a scary few days.

Ophelia, one of the less-socialized members of our Cappy herd, suddenly became unable to stand three days ago. By the next day, she could get up briefly, but only for short periods of time. Given the sudden onset and concerning nature of her symptoms, she was transported to CSU for evaluation.

Thankfully, no significant injuries have been found so far. She is currently on pain medication to keep her comfortable while we wait for additional test results that may help us better understand what happened.

Like many of our aging residents, Ophelia could also benefit from gaining a few pounds. For now, she’s enjoying a little extra TLC in a smaller foster space with our old Annie, where she can receive her medications, rest comfortably, and be thoroughly spoiled. We know she’ll be excited to return home to her herd very soon.

As if one veterinary visit wasn’t enough, our sweet Boris is scheduled for his own veterinary appointment on Monday. We can never predict when these medical needs will arise, but the expenses are certainly beginning to stack up.

If you’re able to help, donations toward Ophelia and Boris’s care are deeply appreciated. Your support allows us to say “yes” when our animals need us most.

Thank you for caring about these special goats as much as we do. ❤️

It was a busy day at the sanctuary. Lucky, Betty, Big Moo, and Little Moo all got their hoof trims. One of our older hens from a hoarding/neglect case a few years ago gave us a scare during midday checks and needed some extra support and monitoring today.

This work is beautiful, but it can also be heavy sometimes. Between medical care, emergencies, transport, treatments, and the everyday needs of so many animals, there is rarely a slow moment here.

The good news: the cows are feeling great, and little Ducky the hen got some sub-q fluids and is now being thoroughly spoiled at a volunteer’s house while she recovers. 💛

Happy International Donkey Day from our sweet girls, Dolly & Taffy!

Donkeys are incredibly intelligent, form deep bonds with their friends, and can even help protect other animals in a herd. They also have amazing memories and can recognize places and companions years later.

We think Dolly and Taffy are pretty special every day, but today they get a little extra love…and extra carrots. 🐴
