This year, Johnstown SCHEELS is helping to support local non-profits by donating $5,000 to 20 different organizations — a total of $100,000 in donations!

We're getting ready for two days of ridiculously good fun for a seriously good cause, and we can't wait to see everyone bring their best (and possibly most ridiculous) selves to the courts!

💛 CLIENT SPOTLIGHT | MEET DEENIE!

From barrel racing to pickleball tournaments, Deenie has never been one to sit on the sidelines!

A Colorado native, Vaundeen (better known as “Deenie”) grew up on a farm in Greeley with her three siblings. And if you're wondering where her unique name came from, there's a story behind that, too! Her father named her after one of his former girlfriends. 😂

Growing up, Deenie developed a love for horses and spent several years competing in barrel racing. Her horse, Bully, even had ties to Secretariat's bloodline!

Deenie went on to build a career with UCHealth, working as the secretary for the Aspen Club. She and her husband, Dennis, shared 50 years of marriage and raised three children together. Today, her family has grown to include six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all living right here in Northern Colorado. 💛

Two years ago, Deenie moved to Affinity in south Fort Collins, where she's continued to embrace an active, social lifestyle. From card games like Hand and Foot to pickleball, she's always finding ways to stay involved.

And she's pretty good at pickleball, too! Deenie and her partner recently took second place in a tournament!

Deenie receives Meals on Wheels twice a week and appreciates both the convenience and affordability of the program. She even shares that she's able to enjoy two meals from each delivery!

What we love most about getting to know our clients is discovering the incredible lives, stories and personalities behind each door.

Deenie reminds us that life is full of new chapters, new adventures and plenty of opportunities to keep doing what you love.

AGING IN LARIMER COUNTY | WHEN YOUR WORLD GETS SMALLER

Think about all the little interactions you have throughout your day.

A conversation with a coworker. Running into someone at the grocery store. A quick hello from a neighbor. Meeting a friend for coffee.

We rarely think twice about these moments.

But what happens when leaving home becomes difficult?

For many homebound neighbors, those everyday interactions become fewer and farther between. Their connection to the community can slowly fade, even while they're living in the same neighborhood they've called home for decades.

And being homebound doesn't mean someone has stopped wanting to be part of the world around them.

They still have stories to share. Friendships to build. And a desire to feel seen, heard and remembered.

That's why Meals on Wheels is about so much more than delivering food.

Our volunteers bring nutritious meals directly to our clients' doors, along with a friendly face, a wellness check and a connection they can count on.

Because no one should have to feel forgotten simply because leaving home has become difficult. 💛

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT: MEET BILLIE 🎶💛

For Billie, music hasn't simply been something she loves. It's been a thread woven through nearly every chapter of her life.

Growing up in Cameron, Texas, Billie sang in her high school and church choirs and played baritone in the marching band. Her father would even ask her to sing when relatives came to visit—something Billie credits with helping build the confidence that would stay with her throughout her musical life.

That love eventually led her to study music, become a choir director and voice teacher, and earn her master's degree in voice performance and pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado.

It even led her to love. 💛
While teaching voice in Florida, one of Billie's students was Charles “Charlie” Welsh. Their relationship eventually became something more, and the two later married and made Fort Collins their home. Through moves, careers, raising a family, love, loss and all the chapters in between, Billie kept singing.
Today, she still sings with the choir at First United Methodist Church, where she has been involved for 26 years.

And recently, Billie celebrated an incredible milestone—her 90th birthday! 🎉
Surrounded by family and friends, Billie did what Billie does best: she sang. She treated everyone to her own modified version of Eydie Gormé's I Wish You Love.

At 90 years young, she's still sharing the gift that's been part of her story since she was a little girl in Texas.

Happy 90th birthday, Billie. We're so grateful we get to know you and be a small part of your story. 💛

AGING IN LARIMER COUNTY 💛
For many of us, staying in our own home as we age sounds like the ideal. Our own bed. Our own routines. Our own neighborhood. The familiar things that make a house feel like home.

But there’s another side of aging at home that we don’t talk about nearly enough. You can be independent and still be lonely.

When driving becomes difficult, mobility changes, friends or spouses pass away, or simply getting out of the house becomes harder, someone's world can slowly become smaller.

That's why connection matters so much.

For our homebound neighbors, the person delivering lunch may also be the person who asks how they're doing. Who notices something seems different. Who stays for a quick conversation. Who knows their name and is genuinely happy to see them.

Aging at home shouldn't have to mean aging alone.
