Meet Richard 💛

Richard has been receiving Meals on Wheels services since 2023, and for him, the program provides something invaluable: convenience, connection, and the ability to continue living independently.

Living alone, Richard appreciates having nutritious meals delivered right to his door. One of his favorites? The sloppy joe. He also enjoys sharing meals with his lady friend, making mealtime a little less lonely and a lot more enjoyable.

A mechanical engineer by trade, Richard began his career working at a nuclear plant before eventually settling in Fort Collins. Over the years, he's built a life filled with interesting experiences—from volunteering with prison fellowship ministries to spending countless hours playing bridge, a hobby he loves for both the social connection and mental challenge.

When asked what he wants the community to know about Meals on Wheels, Richard's answer is simple: it saves older adults a tremendous amount of time and work, making it easier to maintain their independence.

This Sunday, when you attend the Wheels for Meals Car Show, you're helping make stories like Richard's possible.

Every donation, every registration, and every person who shows up helps ensure neighbors like Richard continue receiving the meals, support, and connection they rely on.

🚗 Join us Sunday for the 40th Annual Wheels for Meals Car Show.

Colby first became involved with Meals on Wheels Fort Collins as a delivery driver in 2019. In 2020, he joined the original “Core Team” and witnessed firsthand the incredible ways Meals on Wheels adapted during COVID to continue serving homebound neighbors safely and consistently.

“It was really amazing to be a part of the adaptations that were made.”

That experience deepened his passion for the mission—not only continuing as a volunteer, but eventually becoming a Meals on Wheels Board Member as well.

Originally from Amarillo, Texas, Colby moved to Fort Collins in 2015 with his family. Outside of Meals on Wheels, he works as a Realtor with Keller Williams and loves serving both his clients and community. When he’s not volunteering, you can usually find him fly-fishing the Poudre River, gardening, seeing live music, coaching his son’s baseball team, or cheering on his kids at their sporting events.

For Colby, community involvement isn’t just something he does—it’s part of who he is.

Thank you, Colby, for the countless ways you continue to show up for our neighbors and our mission 💛

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country ❤️🤍💙

Their sacrifice made our freedoms possible, and we are deeply grateful.

As we spend time with family, friends, and community this Memorial Day, we also reflect on the importance of caring for one another—especially our neighbors who may be alone or in need of support.

From all of us at Meals on Wheels Fort Collins, we remember, we honor, and we thank those who served and sacrificed.

Meet Arla and James Sims. They have called Fort Collins home for 40 years, and we are incredibly honored to have them as long-time Meals on Wheels clients.

For Arla and James, family is everything. Their tight-knit circle includes their sons, Marshall and Lance, multiple grandchildren, and their beloved dog, Kobi. In Arla’s words, “I don’t think I could love them more than I do.”

Before sustaining a traumatic injury in 2006, Arla was a manager for Avon, a neighborhood president, and an active school volunteer. Despite the many health challenges the family has faced over the years, her resilient spirit shines through in everything she does. When she isn't spending time with family, she loves channelizing her creativity into jewelry making and watercolor painting.

James keeps just as busy! He loves substitute teaching, acting, and running a business providing video services and technical support for podcasters.

We are so grateful to be a small part of Arla and James’s lives, delivering more than just a meal to neighbors who bring so much inspiration to our community.

Meet Carol Walbye, a superstar volunteer who has truly done it all over her 10 years with Meals on Wheels Fort Collins. Whether she’s serving on the CORE team (B crew), stepping up as a substitute driver, or helping package fresh meals in the PVH kitchen, Carol is always ready to lend a hand.

For Carol, the best part of the job is the team around her. She describes our fellow volunteers and staff as "Awesome...Everyone is willing to do whatever is needed."

Before dedicating so much of her time to MOW, Carol spent 14 years as a kindergarten paraprofessional at Kruse Elementary. Widowed in 2022, her husband Jeff was a pilot with United Airlines—a passion that lives on in their family, as their son Jack is currently working on his commercial pilot’s license!

With aviation in the family, it’s no surprise that Carol is a massive travel enthusiast. She just wrapped up a trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina last month, and this summer she’s jetting off to London, Paris, and Italy! ✈️🌍

When she’s actually home in Northern Colorado, this Fort Collins native stays busy reading, knitting, crocheting, playing pickleball, and catching up on movies. If you need a television recommendation, she highly suggests the Dune series, Sh**un, or Succession.

Thank you, Carol, for your 10 years of unwavering dedication, energy, and heart. Our community is so much brighter because you choose to spend your time with us! 💛

Right now in Larimer County, adults over the age of 60 make up nearly a quarter of our entire population. By 2030, that number is expected to jump significantly.

While many are thriving, hundreds of our aging neighbors, friends, and parents are completely homebound—unable to safely buy groceries, cook a meal, or leave their houses without help.

This is exactly why Meals on Wheels Fort Collins isn't just a luxury; it is an absolute necessity. When a neighbor becomes isolated, the risks to their health skyrocket. Malnutrition, mobility issues, and the heavy weight of loneliness can quickly turn a manageable living situation into a safety crisis. We step into that gap every single day.
🍱 Nutritious Meals: We deliver hot, fresh, dietitian-approved meals directly to their doors so they never have to choose between their health and their independence.
💛 Wellness & Connection: For many of our clients, our volunteers are the only people they see all day.

That quick chat at the door is a vital safety check that keeps them connected to the world. As our local population ages, the need for this care is growing rapidly. No one in our community should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from or handle isolation alone.

👉 How you can help: If you know a senior or someone with a disability who is struggling to safely prepare meals at home, please refer them to us today.

To anyone checking in on an aging parent from across town (or across the country):

When you call them, do you find yourself subtly interrogating them about what they ate today? Do you worry about the stove being left on, or if they’ve seen another human being all afternoon?

You don't have to carry that worry alone.

When you sign a loved one up for Meals on Wheels, you aren’t just getting food delivered. You are getting a dedicated volunteer who will stand at their door, look them in the eye, have a genuine conversation, and make sure they are safe. If something seems off, we let you know immediately.

Give yourself... and them... the gift of consistent, daily support.
