Upavim Community Development

Upavim Community Development UPAVIM fosters collaboration and women's empowerment in its leadership structure. Because of this, UPAVIM's work is more important than ever.

The UPAVIM Community Development Foundation empowers women and children in an impoverished urban "red zone" of Guatemala City through support for education and Fair Trade employment in our crafts programs. UPAVIM Community Development Foundation (UCDF) is a US-based 501c3 non-profit dedicated to supporting the women and families of the UPAVIM cooperative, located in the urban "red zone" of La Espe

ranza, in Guatemala City. UPAVIM is a 70 member cooperative of women that seeks to create employment and educational opportunities for low-income women and their children through a variety of social programs. UCDF supports the running of the UPAVIM Montessori elementary school, community library, English classes, after-school program, free daycare center, community health center, and the UPAVIM crafts program- providing Fair Trade employment opportunities to women in the cooperative. Since 1989, these programs have provided services to thousands of families throughout La Esperanza and transformed the area into a viable community. "Esperanza" means "hope" in Spanish- and that is what UPAVIM has provided for over 30 years to countless families in Guatemala! Despite the progress that has been made in the lives of many, the community of La Esperanza still suffers from many of the social issues that plague many marginalized urban populations- gang violence, domestic violence, illiteracy, single mothers as sole providers, unemployment, alcoholism. We thank you for your support of this life-changing project!

✨ Empowering UPAVIM’s Next Generation of Leaders! ✨

We’re excited to share an incredible opportunity for our community!

After mentoring UPAVIM’s leadership team, Eder Cuevas, Executive Director of Montessori AMI Mexico, has generously offered a 75% scholarship for two of our dedicated leaders, Brenda and Pahola, to attend a prestigious leadership workshop.

This is more than a course—it’s an investment in the future of UPAVIM. 💛

Thanks to this generous scholarship, we only need to raise $480 total to make this opportunity possible for both of them.

Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to our goal and supports Brenda and Pahola in bringing new knowledge, skills, and vision back to their community.

Our goal is to raise these funds by August and with your support, we know it’s possible!

Thank you for believing in our leaders and in the power of education to transform communities. 💛

An empty UPAVIM Community Library is a rare sight, usually you’ll find this room bursting at the seams with energy, laughter, and the rustle of turning pages.

Most children in our community don’t have access to books at home. So, they flood to this community safe space to do homework, log onto computers, tackle puzzles, and dive into a world of stories.

At UPAVIM, we often see the most meaningful learning happen when children begin to extend the work on their own.

Here, the Pink Tower and Brown Stair come together in a self-created extension—blocks combined, contrasted, and reimagined by the child.

What begins as two distinct materials becomes a study in relationships: thick and thin, large and small, height and width. The child is not simply repeating a lesson—they are transforming it, testing their understanding through construction and design.

Each adjustment is intentional. Each choice is informed by observation. And through this process, the child deepens their understanding of form while strengthening concentration and problem-solving skills.

These moments reflect a core belief: when children are given well-prepared materials and the freedom to explore them, they do not just learn concepts, they begin to think with them.

At UPAVIM, we recognize the importance of process.

In the classroom, this unfolds in simple, meaningful ways.

A child selects work, carries it carefully, completes each step with intention, and returns it to its place.

This sequence is not just routine; it is construction.

Through beginning, middle, and completion, the child builds focus, independence, and a sense of order within themselves.

And in that process, something deeper forms: a growing sense of capability and self.

The Reforzamiento program (or "Reforz") provides a safe sanctuary for children after the school bell rings. In a neighborhood where streets can be unpredictable, Reforz offers more than just homework help, it offers a place to play, grow, and dream.

From primary school tutoring to interactive games, this program ensures that every child has the support they need to succeed academically and the space to just be a kid. 🎨⚽

How you can help: Reforz operates entirely on the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our volunteers. Visit the link in our bio to see how you can support the next generation of leaders in Guatemala. ✨

At UPAVIM, the materials themselves call the child to work.

On the shelves, each material is complete, orderly, and inviting—designed not to demand attention, but to quietly attract it.

A child pauses, looks, and chooses. Not because they are told to, but because something about the material sparks curiosity.

Hands reach out. Work begins.

The child becomes absorbed—repeating, adjusting, discovering. What draws them in at first begins to hold them more deeply, guiding concentration and engagement from within.

The guide does not direct this moment. Instead, they prepare the conditions for it, trusting that when materials are thoughtfully designed and beautifully presented, the child will respond.

This is the power of the Montessori environment: learning that begins with interest, and deepens into focus, independence, and understanding.

At UPAVIM, mathematics is something children can see, touch, and experience.

Here, a child is working with the bead chains—carefully counting, grouping, and laying out each bead with intention.

Through skip counting, patterns begin to emerge. Numbers are no longer abstract; they become visible, rhythmic, and connected.

The child moves along the chain, counting in sequence, building not only numerical understanding, but concentration and order.

Each step is deliberate. Each number has meaning.

In this work, math is not memorized; it is understood.

At UPAVIM, we return often to this truth:

“The goal of early childhood education should be to activate the child's own natural desire to learn.” —Maria Montessori

This desire is not something we create. It is something we protect.

We see it in the child who chooses work independently, who returns to it again and again, who finds satisfaction not in praise, but in the process itself.

The environment offers possibility. The materials invite exploration. The guide observes and supports.

And within this balance, something powerful unfolds:
a child who is not being taught what to think, but discovering how to learn.
