🚲 Big news for people who bike in Colorado!

As we kick off Bike Month, a new state law signed by Governor Polis makes it illegal to stop, stand, or park in a designated bike lane anywhere in Colorado.

Bike lanes are designed to provide a safe space for people riding bikes. When vehicles block them, riders are often forced into traffic, creating unnecessary risks. Under the new law, drivers who obstruct a bike lane can face a Class B traffic infraction and fines of up to $100.
There are limited exceptions, including complying with police directions, official traffic control devices, or avoiding conflicts with other traffic.

This is an important step forward for safer streets across Colorado and a reminder that bike lanes are for bikes. 🚴‍♀️💙

A 23-year-old Fort Collins man, Hezekiah Maes, has died following a crash involving an e-bike (e-bicycle, not e-moto) and an SUV at the intersection of South Timberline Road and East Lincoln Avenue, according to the Colorado State Patrol and his family.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:51 p.m. on May 22nd.

According to CSP, Maes was riding an e-bike eastbound on Lincoln Avenue and approaching the intersection with Timberline Road. A red Lincoln SUV was traveling northbound on Timberline Road through the intersection. The intersection is controlled by stop signs on Lincoln Avenue, but not on Timberline Road.

Investigators say Maes entered the intersection and was struck on the right side by the SUV. The impact ejected him from the e-bike.

Maes was transported to the Medical Center of the Rockies with life-threatening injuries. His family said he suffered severe brain injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead on May 25th.

No charges have been filed.

The tragedy came during an already difficult time for the Maes family. According to family members, the crash occurred one day before the funeral of Hezekiah's father. The funeral was postponed in hopes that Hezekiah would recover. Following his death, the family has been awaiting the completion of necessary paperwork in order to plan services honoring both father and son.

YGR extends its condolences to Hezekiah's family, friends, and loved ones as they navigate an unimaginable loss.

Yesterday, Senate Bill 26-072, a bill that will help hold dangerous drivers accountable who hit and kill other people, passed the House and was sent to the Governor for his signature. Many people worked tirelessly over many years (dating back to 2019) to help make this happen. Over this time, far too many lives have been lost. To all the families who have lost loved ones to traffic violence and worked tirelessly to pass this law, thank you! We are honored to stand with you to advocate for safe streets.

We’re also grateful to AAA Colorado, Bike Jeffco, MADD Colorado, Thewhiteline.org, and the law enforcement community. Your thought partnership and advocacy helped make this happen. Lastly, thank you to Senators John Carson and Marc Snyder for your leadership, and Representatives Cecilia Espinoza and Bob Marshal for shepherding the bill through the House.

Action Alert - Save America's Bike Lanes

The Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy has said the federal government shouldn’t be funding bike lanes. The top member of Congress writing the next transportation reauthorization bill has said that the next five years of federal funding won’t include bicycling and walking projects. Tell Congress you care about bike lanes and safe, connected transportation networks. Ask them to support bicycling and walking in DC and around the country.
