Dignified livelihoods are so much more than an opportunity to make an income – they should be an opportunity to be fully who we are.

In late August, members of our Indigenous Lands team, alongside local Tribes, had the opportunity to participate in a traditional bison harvest at the Zapata Ranch Preserve.

Our Indigenous Lands Program Director, James Calabaza, described the experience best: “This opportunity really uplifted our spirits as Indigenous peoples. We got to be Indigenous while on the job”.

Honduras punches above its weight in the murder and disappearance of environmental defenders. That's a big reason why TWP works there.

1/3 of environmental defenders killed worldwide are Indigenous, and 2/3 of the 2,300 killed since 2012 have been in Latin America. Disputes are most often over territory and natural resources - TWP tragically lost a friend and collaborator in this way in 2024 (Blog in comments).

That's one more reason to keep shouting... and continuing to support the work of environmental defenders everywhere.

⛈️ A stroke of luck…

Following an unprecedentedly dry and warm winter, we’re proud to be making steady progress in reforesting the Cerro Pelado burn scar and supporting employment opportunities for Native youth.

After being canceled due to dry and hot conditions, much-needed spring rains made planting viable.

We supported five Native youth from Taos Pueblo, members of the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps-New Mexico, in Cerro Pelado reforestation efforts.

Part of a multi-year effort to plant 45,000 trees in the area, the crew planted 2500 ponderosa pine and douglas fir seedlings across 15 acres during their spring hitch.
