Our club held our annual Speech contest for local high school students. The Speech Contest began 28 years ago by our club member, Irene Toliver, and has expanded to all of Colorado. This year's topic is "How can we effectively serve our Senior population?" The recipients received a financial award and our first place winner, Alliyah, will go on to compete at the District convention on March 28. The winner of the District competition will go on to a State competition. The 4 speakers did a remarkable job presenting their ideas on how to serve the Senior community and challenges faced by the senior population.
From Left to Right: President David Hartman; 4th Place-Ganah, Poudre HS, $75; 3rd Place-Julia, Fort Collins HS, $75; 2nd Place-Catlin, Fossil Ridge HS, $150; 1st Place-Alliyah, Rocky Mountain HS, $200; and Past District Governor Denise Clynes.

Our club was thrilled to present an adaptive bicycle to Julian at our last meeting. The bicycle is from the Cycle for Life program that started in Lubbock, Texas by Lion Joe Tarver. Julian and his parents, Heather and Dan, attended our meeting where the bicycle was given. Dan addressed the Club and let us know how much the bicycle will mean to Julian and his family. Local bicycle shop owner, Alex Hovorka, assembled the bike for us and came to our meeting, as well, to make the final adjustments for Julian. THANK YOU, ALEX!!! When asked after Julian had his "test drive" how he liked the bike, his response was, "so cool!" Ride on, Julian, and enjoy your bike!

On Valentine's Morning, Lions David, Shari, Tobey and Sue, along with friends Ryan, Lindsey, and daughter spent two hours at the Slammin' Famine food packing event. Tobey was in the bulk distribution area reloading the tubs of food. Ryan was in the bulk distribution area - running food big tubs of food to the tables to keep the packing going. During our shift, we - along with the other groups - packed over 15,300 bags of food. That's enough to feed 42 children for a year!! In addition to packing food, our club donated $500 to Slammin' Famine. WAY TO GO!!!!!

Slammin’ Famine is the Northern Colorado Mobile-Pack event that helps Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), a nonprofit hunger relief organization, in accomplishing their mission. Over the past 10 years, Slammin’ Famine together with Northern Colorado has packed over 5 million meals, raised over $1 million, feeding over 15,000 kids for a year. More than 20,000 volunteers have participated.

It was another busy and fun day at our Lions Club lunch this week. President David installed three new members. Lion Ron (left) was sponsored by his cousin, Tina. Lion Tina, (second from end) and Lion Annette and their sponsor, Denise (in blue), and Lion David. It's great to see our club grow!

Our guest speaker was Fort Collins author, Teresa Funke. We have been a long-time supporter of Teresa's and were pleased to present her with a check for $500 toward her book program. Teresa has written a series of World War II fiction for adults and children in addition to a blog/book that helps you tap into your creative purpose. With her book program she has donated over 10,000 books and book sets into the schools, as well as lesson planning materials for teachers, and gone into the classrooms to speak to the students. She is always an inspiration and we wish her well on all of her future endeavors.
