On this day in 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure that all enslaved people be freed, as declared by the Emancipation Proclamation signed a full two and a half years prior. Known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and most commonly referred to as Juneteenth, this anniversary is cause for celebration as well as reflection.

The history of the United States is one riddled with battles for freedom, justice, and equality. Our African American loved ones, including and especially those who are LGBTQ+, still fight discrimination due to their marginalized identities.

Celebrate trans and nonbinary people in your neighborhood with Authentic Selves! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Developed in collaboration with PFLAG National and Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund, Family Diversity Project’s traveling exhibit, Authentic Selves, explores gender identity while offering a compelling look at the challenges and the triumphs of remarkable trans and nonbinary people, and their loved ones. With stunning photographs and first-person interviews, this exhibit seeks to challenge damaging myths and stereotypes about trans and nonbinary people and to educate people about this community.

Authentic Selves can be used in schools, colleges, houses of worship, libraries, museums, conferences, and workplaces to help create safer environments. Bring this celebratory exhibit to your community, along with the companion book, which features a foreword by trans activist, Jazz Jennings, and her mother Jeanette, as well as a preface by Brian K. Bond, CEO of PFLAG National.

The True Name Mastercard campaign was pitched by Lucas Crigler, a trans copywriter at McCann New York who personally experienced the challenges the campaign addressed. Unlike typical Pride campaigns that focus on visibility, True Name called for a concrete policy change, allowing trans and nonbinary people to use their correct names on credit cards. The campaign quietly influenced the American banking industry, demonstrating how lived experience combined with advocacy can create meaningful systemic change 🌈
