Just after midnight on June 6, 1944, the first of the Paratroopers stepped out into the darkness. They began the Liberation of Europe that had long been awaited by those under the boot of occupation. The Airborne would seize key terrain to try to facilitate the beach landings happening in only a few hours. All did not go exactly as planned and the drops became scattered and intermingled. This started the longstanding legend of the "LGOPs" or Little Groups of Paratroopers. The Allied Airborne Troopers created panic and mayhem with ad hoc units formed from whoever could be assembled. Someone took charge and they moved to the sounds of the guns and somehow achieved their objectives. The audacious, and tenacious LGOPS became legendary.
