As Bridger Valley celebrates Independence Day, this year's Grand Marshal represents not only his own service, but an entire generation of Americans who answered their nation's call.
Ray Tanner, the oldest living veteran in Uinta County, has been selected as the 4th of July Parade Grand Marshal in recognition of his military service during the Korean War and his lifelong connection to our community.
While Tanner has chosen to let his actions speak louder than words, local history offers a glimpse into his service. According to accounts from fellow Uinta County veteran and author Dennis Ottley, Tanner served as a tank commander in Korea. He was awarded the Purple Heart after his tank struck an anti-tank mine during a raid, though those who knew him recalled he accepted the honor with characteristic humility.
Like so many veterans of his generation, Tanner returned home after the war and became part of the fabric of the community he served. His story is one shared by many Korean War veterans—ordinary men who answered an extraordinary call, then quietly returned to their families, jobs, and hometowns without seeking recognition.
This Independence Day, Bridger Valley is proud to recognize Ray Tanner not only for the sacrifices he made during the Korean War, but for representing all of the veterans whose courage and service have helped preserve the freedoms we celebrate each Fourth of July.
