Happy Thanksgiving to all! As we gather around the table or blind with family and friends, let us give thanks for all of our blessings and freedoms. We live in a great nation that still provides the freedom to hunt, fish, and trap on literally millions of public-access acres. And you, the sportsman, a true conservationist, have played a significant role in that. Thank you for helping to preserve this freedom that we enjoy. And, of course, thank you for your support of Ducks Unlimited. We here at Ducks Unlimited are extremely thankful for that. Have a great Thanksgiving, wherever that may find you! —Ducks Unlimited President Bob Spoerl

Twenty-four years ago, to this day, we watched as planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

If you are old enough, you more than likely remember the exact moment when you heard about the attacks. You turned on the television and watched in horror as the Twin Towers fell, the Pentagon burned, and as smoke rose from a field in rural Pennsylvania.

You would soon come to realize that you woke up in one world and ended the day in another.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 who lost their lives that somber morning. We remember the first responders who went on heroic rescue missions and never made it back out. We remember the passengers and crew members of Flight 93 who disrupted the hijackers on board and prevented additional destruction.

We remember. We will never forget. And we will forever say, "Let's roll."

Is there a better way to kick off hunting season?

Ducks Unlimited is aware of discussions within the federal budgeting process surrounding the funding for the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory and would oppose any proposal that would reduce funding for this critical tool. Steve Adair, DU Chief Scientist, offers more insight into its importance:

“Recent science on bird populations proves only migratory waterfowl populations have increased over the last 50 years, while many other bird populations have declined. The bird banding lab, along with funding from programs like the federal duck stamp and the passion of North American waterfowlers, is directly responsible for this success. Wildlife professionals depend on the bird banding lab to make informed decisions on current and future hunting seasons and bag limits. Without continued funding and science, we lose the ability to manage waterfowl responsibly and we risk losing what generations of hunters have built.”
