Mushroom Dye with Shibori

We will dye a silk scarf using a Japanese technique of Shibori to make the patterns and will use mushroom dye.

Mayumi is a fiber artist using natural dye and mushroom dye with the technique called botanical printing which uses real leaves to transfer colors and shapes from plants onto natural fibers. She has been a wild forager since young and studied field botany for edible plants and medicinal plants. The last 11 years, she has foraged and studied mushrooms to eat and to dye. All the materials she uses are ethically harvested from the Bay area. Her art pieces are sold at art galleries, Art Museums in Seattle, San Francisco and other prestigious mushroom and art festivals. She won an artist award at Mill Valley Art Show.

Working with geometric and organic shapes, you will create a fun, expressive, and visually stunning piece in this class that can be mounted on a canvas panel to be hung on the wall. You’ll create an original hand stitched piece, approximately 14” x 18” to explore composition and the relationships between shapes while also experimenting with color and value.

April Sproule is a textile artist with a lifelong love of fabric and making. With a strong foundation in design, sewing, and quilting, she has been a full time, award winning studio artist at Sproule Studios for many years.

THE ART OF TAPESTRY WEAVING: Techniques, Patterns, and Color Blending

Weave with sumptuous fine wool yarns and learn tapestry techniques including hatchings, hachures, slits, and patterns for combining colors, and experiment with eccentric or non-horizontal weaving. Begin with warping a small loom and choosing or creating a design for your paper cartoon to use as a guide during weaving.

TRICIA GOLDBERG has taught tapestry weaving for over 35 years. She teaches at her studio in Berkeley, CA, and loves to travel to teach workshops. She weaves commissioned tapestries as well as her own work which has been widely exhibited. Tricia’s work appears in various collections and in publications, including Fiberarts Design Book 3, 4, and 7 and The Tapestry Handbook by Carol Russell. Tricia is a founding member of Tapestry Weavers West, a west coast organization formed in 1985.

Finding Your Regional Color Palette, Foraging to Make Dyes

What amazing dye materials can you find within a 100-mile radius. This class is a great way to find your color palette by growing or foraging materials in your area to make dyes. There are many ways to make and use the materials you may find and with the addition of different tannins, you are able to expand your colors and help make them more light fast.

Michael Spurgeon has been using natural dyes and teaching workshops for more than 40 years and has a great interest in local color palettes. Mother Nature provides many materials that we can use for dyeing. For the past 8 years, Michael Spurgeon has been using mushrooms from across the world to produce colors to dye with. He turns the dyed yarn into knitted socks and hats and finds that natural dyes are rich in hues and go well together.

Mayumi Fujio works with traditional craft techniques – Ikebana, silver jewelry, ceramic art, sewing, dying with mushrooms, and knitting. Fiber art is a natural progression and botanical printing is bringing together all of the handicraft skills she developed in the past. Her inspiration comes from art, nature, and simply looking at flowers and plants wherever she goes. After learning the technique of botanical printing, Mayumi has been experimenting with the combination of traditional and newly discovered natural dye techniques. As a modern craft, botanical printing is a constant cycle of learning and experimentation, yet it can never be fully controlled. Just like nature.
Her latest series is a combination of mushroom dye and botanical prints. All the plants she uses are ethically harvested from the Bay Area.

Tricia Goldberg has been designing, weaving, and exhibiting tapestries for over 35 years. She seeks to maintain a freshness and liveliness in all her weavings. She works with color before finalizing a design, but works from a black and white cartoon behind the loom, leaving room for play and experimentation. Tricia teaches Tapestry weaving in her Berkeley studio.
