OPERATION THORNWOOD was a blast! Over 100 PHW volunteers and participants from several states gathered in WV for an extended weekend of fly tying, fly fishing education, and some great fly fishing! This annual event is one that our participants anticipate and nominate themselves to make that they get to go. Thank you to Bubba Holt and his volunteers that make this event successful each and every year. Awesome!

Expanding the impact! Another great week of interaction during our bi-monthly fly rod knot classes. Nathaniel and Mike provided a great briefing introducing PHW to several service members at Fort Bragg outpatient clinics. They all did a great job showcasing our program’s opportunities to potential participants.

Where are they now? Well, Nick traveled across this great country of ours to attend guide school in Montana via Oklahoma and Kansas and targeted several species to add to our annual species list. He has done very well with adding 7 to the program list to include an American paddlefish that blew up (into several more pieces than the original 4) his just finished 8 wt fly rod that he just used to earn his Build, Tie, Cast, Catch (BTCC) certificate with. Mudhole is graciously sending him new sections after hearing his story. By the way, Nick has added 22 species total to our list of 65 for the year which is about 1/3 of our list! Way to go! Awesome!

Another great week at Oak Heart Lodge! This past week was North Carolina week with participants from our local programs. A great variety of fish were caught, new techniques were explored, and a great time was had by all. Thank you, Oak Heart Lodge, for hosting our participants like you do for everyone from across the country. Your dedication, charity, and professionalism are on display at all times. OHL is a great opportunity! Take advantage of any chance you may get to go!

Record broken and in record time! Our list has exploded this year from all the effort our group has put into it. We beat last year's record of 59 and we are not looking back. We hit 63 in less than 5 months! That is crazy! Having people fish Florida and while they are driving cross country sure boosted the number with 12 species being added in one week with more to come. Our stated goal was 60 so maybe we should go for 70! And yes, that is an American paddlefish caught and released in Kansas! The 8 wt didn't survive! Keep it going!

Today is solemnly special. As we all do our Memorial Day activities, it is important for us to remember and reflect on the sacrifices that have been made by our military Veterans. In observation of this day, please devote at least one minute to pause, honor, and remember the millions of men and women who gave their lives for their country.
Thank you to all of our Veterans for your sacrifices you made and your service to our country.

Wet flies for everyone! Not a type of fly we all tie but the actual condition that we had to deal with at the 4th annual Maggie Valley Fly Fishing Festival hosted by the Maggie Valley Fly Shop every Spring. It was wet but that didn't dampen the collective spirit of the attendees or event. No one can control the weather; however everyone had a great time celebrating this thing we call fly fishing in a beautiful setting in Western NC. The Fayetteville and Asheville programs provided information and contacts about PHW to everyone who stopped by our booth. We are already making plans for next year. You should also. See you there!

Croakers and crabs! Between rainstorms, our hardy saltwater anglers were able to find some croaker and some blue crabs. The crabs are bycatch but are very pretty this time of year and aptly named. Thank you to Randy, a volunteer that provides his expertise, time and his boat to get our vets out into saltwater that definitely is a challenge but is very rewarding for everyone involved. Saltwater fly fishing is the hardest most frustrating fun you will ever have! Come join us!

Ants are everywhere! Terrestrials are great for Spring to Summer outings. The two fly patterns present by Scott at our monthly fly ting this month covered a dry and an underwater version of an ant. Thank you Scott for providing these great patterns! Come out and join us if you are local to the Fayetteville area!
