Paul Bunyan Days

Paul Bunyan Days Since 1939, our annual community Paul Bunyan Days celebration includes education on both logging history and innovative sustainable forestry practices.

The Paul Bunyan Days Association also provides scholarships in fields of forestry/conservation. Paul Bunyan Days is a family friendly festival packed with free - or almost free- activities so everyone can come. The Paul Bunyan Days Association (PBDA) organizes it, community sponsors pay for it, and volunteers make it
happen. Paul Bunyan Days is always a lumber-jack rowdy good time as it has been

for the last 76 years. The PBDA brings you this small-town celebration which includes a Logging Show, Historic Steam Engines, a Forestland Expo, Main Street Parade, Kiddie Parade, Tricycle Race, Belle of the Redwoods,
Ugly Dog (and more) Contest, and Old Fashion Dress Review. Other community groups offer activities too - the Kiddie Games, Horseshoe Tournament, two Craft Fairs, Gem & Mineral Show, Pie Sale,
Community BBQ, Book Sale, Fireman's Ball, Model Trains, Hot Dog Eating Contest, Classic Car Show, Logger Breakfast, Footlighter's Gaslight Gayeties, Steam Donkey Fun Run and a special history Walk with Paul and Fort Bragg's Native Daughters around Fort Bragg. Named for the bigger-than-life logger and his giant blue ox, the festival celebrates the history of the community and pays tribute to the strength of the people who live here. The theme changes each year, for 2016 it is 'Back to the Wild Wild West with Paul and Babe'. Paul Bunyan hosts the festival live and in person; when you see him say hello and ask him to pose for a picture.

We awarded two scholarships this year. These are excerpts from the recipients' essay applications:

Kalin Yanez

“… I’ve grown up understanding how important forests are to both the environment and our local community … I’ve also been involved in Paul Bunyan Days … Interact Club … 4-H and FFA … I want to find a balance between conservation and responsible use. … I’ve been accepted to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where I’ll be majoring in Environmental Science. I plan to take classes like forest ecology, soil science, environmental management and learn how ecosystems work and how to manage them.”

Ryan J. Welter:

“… I want a career that allows me to protect natural resources while educating others on how to responsibly enjoy them. … Spending time in forests, rangelands, and coastal environments allowed me to see how changes in land use and habitat conditions can affect wildlife over time. … My goal is to become a Fish and Wildlife Warden, where I can contribute to conservation through habitat protection, law enforcement, and public education. … I hope to ensure that California’s wildlife and natural habitats remain healthy and accessible for generations to come.”

Water Fights! A fun tradition between the Fort Bragg Volunteer Fire Department and other fire departments along the coast, such as Westport and Mendocino. The crowd is often "accidently" sprayed with water. 😉

Did you know … Paul Bunyan Days Association offers scholarships supporting a healthy environment. Since 1939, we have promoted not only forestry, but also ecology – sustainable harvesting techniques which protect streams, meadows, and wildlife, while also allowing access for recreational use. Our annual scholarship is awarded to high school seniors intending to study Forestry or Forestry Ecology, or courses related to environmental issues. Applications will be submitted this summer.
