Happy National Love a Tree day from Georgia Forestry Foundation!

Georgia’s forests are stewarded by more than 150,000 families and individuals who love their trees, care for their land and invest their own resources to ensure forests are healthy for future generations.

One meaningful way to support those forests is to use more Georgia-grown wood. Mass timber, for example, gives builders, designers and communities a renewable construction option while creating stronger markets for working forests, which help keep forests as forests.

Thanks to modern forest management, tree harvesting and thinning creates a healthier environment for plants and animals, as well as helping Georgia’s foresters.

Wildfires across South Georgia are threatening homes, forestland, property, and rural livelihoods.

In response, the Georgia Forestry Foundation has launched the Forest Wildfire Recovery Fund to provide direct, practical support to forest landowners, families, wildland firefighters, first responders, and communities impacted by wildfire.

GFF is seeding the fund with an initial $10,000 investment. Gifts to the fund may support direct recovery grants, cleanup and restoration assistance, reforestation support, and other immediate needs connected to wildfire damage and recovery.

“Our Power, Our Planet” is the 2026 Earth Day theme with a focus on “mobilizing action for renewable energy” and “protecting biodiversity.” Georgia's 22 million acres of privately-owned working forests have been serving in these roles for more than a century. Earth Day allows us to connect the Metro-Atlanta community with the rural communities that help bolster Georgia's forestry industry and sustain our ability to have clean air, water, and more than 5,000 products we all use every day.

At the end of last year, GFF wrapped up its five-city Mass Timber Hub series in Atlanta - ending a yearlong effort to accelerate the adoption of mass timber construction across the state. The series brought together architects, engineers, developers, planners, elected officials, academics and industry leaders to explore how mass timber can strengthen Georgia’s economy and advance sustainability goals.

Across the five hubs, Savannah, Macon, Columbus, Athens and Atlanta, GFF convened more than 300 attendees, and 36 presenters. The series brought together national and regional experts to share lessons learned, highlight case studies and discuss pathways to scale. It also provided a chance for local leaders to hear directly from peers who are advancing mass timber projects in their own communities. That collaboration is already translating into new projects, deeper market understanding, and increased interest from developers and decision-makers across Georgia.

In January, members of the Drawdown Georgia Business Compact joined GFF and partners for a South Georgia field tour—visiting storm-impacted communities in Swainsboro and Soperton, and seeing a healthy working forest at a longleaf pine conservation site in Metter.

Having recently launched the Working Forest Carbon Exchange program, the goal of the tour was to help prospective carbon buyers experience forest management on the ground and hear directly from the people who live it—small-acreage family forest owners, loggers and wood dealers, forest product manufacturing professionals, and landowners still reeling from Helene’s catastrophic damage and market disruptions.

Special thanks to Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business for their article on how stakeholders learned about challenges, opportunities, and how buying carbon credits through the new exchange could help their business!
