On Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending the North Branch Trout Derby Association’s 2026 Trout Derby for Special Needs and Veterans. It was a perfect day to be outdoors with more than 100 anglers keeping tight lines at Lawson Pond in Forkston. This free community event has become an annual tradition for many families and even gives some participants the chance to catch their very first fish!

Congratulations to all the derby winners and a heartfelt thank you to the North Branch Trout Derby Association for hosting such a meaningful community event. Sixth from the left in the group photo is the association’s president, Bruce Pitts. Bruce has been involved with NBTDA since its founding 18 years ago.
