Happy Loon Fact Friday!
Loons are built for life in the water. They’re amazing swimmers and divers thanks to several special adaptations. Their large, webbed feet act like powerful paddles, helping them move quickly underwater. When swimming on the surface, they may paddle with both feet together or alternate between them and sometimes they even tuck one foot under a wing while using the other to steer forward.
Loons can also use their wings to help them skim across the water when chasing or escaping other birds. Their bodies are designed to reduce drag and move smoothly underwater. Even the position of their skull helps keep their head aligned with their body while diving. Before a dive, loons compress their feathers and push air out of their bodies to reduce buoyancy. Then they either sink quietly or launch downward with strong kicks from their back feet, stretching their necks forward as they dive. Between dives, they stay low in the water to make swimming and hunting easier.
