Come celebrate July 4 today at Roosevelt State Park

MORTON – Scott County’s own Roosevelt State Park will be part of a statewide July 4 celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks is hosting a program whereas seven state parks are featuring selected themes. Roosevelt’s theme is festival in nature while other parks focus on specific activities.
Admission to Roosevelt is $5.
The Friends of Roosevelt State Park support group organized a wide range of activities in partnership with the park’s staff in preparation for the holiday event.
“We are very excited about this year’s Independence Day celebrations and, while we have organized activities for past holidays, we have worked extra hard this year to go all out for America’s 250th anniversary,” said Friends of Roosevelt President Beverly Tadlock. “We will have activities for the whole family to enjoy and celebrate our country in style. We appreciate all the support from our community for helping to make this event possible. We could not do this without our contributors.”
In addition to many activities throughout the holiday, there are opportunities for visitors to win a variety of prizes through purchasing raffle tickets.
“We encourage everyone to support future park activities by purchasing a chance to win one of these great prizes donated by our partners in this event,” Tadlock said.
The holiday will kick off today at 10 a.m. when the vendors and Kids Zone areas re-open.
Music entertainment will run from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. featuring “DJ Groovy Entertainment” at Paviion 2.
An antique car show will remain on display from 2 until 9 p.m.
A camper decorating contest will be underway around the campgrounds from 3 until 4 p.m. where visitors can show their patriotic spirit.
Patriotism will also be on display with a golf cart and bike parade in the Day Use area from 4 until 5 p.m.
At 5 p.m., an America 250 Flag Ceremony will be held in front of the roundabout by the pool house. Immediately following will be a presentation of the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance at Pavilion 2. This particular activity will be simultaneously held at this moment at all seven parks participating in the statewide celebration.
Shortly thereafter the ceremony, music will resume at Pavilion 2 featuring 90 Proof Entertainment until 9 p.m.
The traditional boat parade featuring patriotic decorations on Shadow Lake will launch at 7 p.m. with two loops around the lake and judging at the boathouse piers.
All other activities will end, leading to the grand finale of fireworks at 9 p.m. shot from a barge in the center of the lake.
Raffle tickets are available to win prizes including a Yeti 45 cooler donated by Truckworx, and two patriotic design quilts donated by Pat Johnson. One ticket for $5 or a pack of 5 tickets for $20 will be available for purchase with proceeds going to Friends of Roosevelt State Park for the purpose of funding future family-friendly events at the park. Drawings will be held at 8 pm. Come by the Scott County Chess Club tent near the swimming pool to purchase a ticket.
